Hi I'm Ben Backstein

I grew up in Washington. I'm preparing to serve as a missionary and my family is very important to me. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Right now I'm preparing to serve as a missionary for the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. So right now, that will pretty much be my life for the next two years. That means no dating - which, in turn, means I'm single. It's great. It really is. Any way, I graduated from high school in 2012. I went up to school at BYU-Idaho and took some time figuring out what I really wanted to do. After some flip-flopping, I discovered that I really want to pursue nursing. It may be a long road but it's the road I want to pursue. I'm just trying to make my life work as I'm sure so many others are.

Why I am a Mormon

Why I'm a Mormon... also where to start... I guess I'll start by saying I was born into the church. But I don't think that necessarily means I've always been a convert. I believe that there comes a point in everybody's life where they start to question what they've known or what they've been taught in their life. That point came to me a few years ago. For a while I really was not sure of what I believed. However, through the Gospel and brothers and sisters who helped me discover myself, I was able to come to a deeper understanding of the Gospel. While I felt low, I was able to be risen up again - and through doing so come to a greater appreciation of my Father and Heaven. I recognized those things which brought me down and grew to understand the things which brought me up. The things which brought me up were the Gospel, Heavenly Father, and the people the Lord has blessed me with in my life. That's my story. As for why I really am a Mormon, I think we discover more and more about that every day. But now that I think of it, I'm a Mormon because I want to grow closer to my brothers and sisters and achieve salvation with them. I'm a Mormon because I believe we can all be saved and that our Father in Heaven wants us to return to Him. At times we all still have questions. We don't know everything and it's important to be able to accept that. Sometimes I have trouble with that. But I know my Father in Heaven understands that - and regardless of that, He still loves us. That's why I'm a Mormon - because our Father in Heaven loves us no matter what and I want to do what I can to serve Him and to serve His children, my brothers and sisters.

How I live my faith

Where to start? I suppose I'll just start writing and hopefully something will come to me. I think that, to me, the most important aspect of the Gospel is that of unity. That's what I prefer to focus on when I think about going to church or "living my faith." Sure, we can spend all the time we want studying the scriptures or or the words of prophets (both of which are very important to do), but how meaningful is it unless we share the knowledge and understanding we gain with those around us? One of the main reasons Heavenly Father sent us here is so that we could achieve salvation through pursuing righteousness with our brothers and sisters on this earth. Having said that, I am now living my faith by preparing to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. By the time many will read this I will already be serving. I will be serving for two years in the Houston, Texas mission. It's going to be hot and I'm going to be sweaty. I will be serving both members of the church and those who are not members. We serve both those who are members and those who are not because regardless of actual church membership, we are all brothers and sisters in God. We were all sent here and our Father wants us to return to Him.
