Hi I'm Albert James May

I'm a multicultural Utahn, a writer, a filmmaker, and a Mormon.

About Me

I am a recent high-school graduate who will be living and serving in Johannesburg, South Africa for the next two years as a full-time missionary for the Mormon church. I love to write and read, and have written several short stories over the years. I am an avid film-lover and enjoy finding and watching films that challenge the mind and touch the heart and soul. I love to broaden my perspectives, to learn new things and gain insights on things I already know or believe, and to look at things from a new angle, and film is a fantastic way to ponder on the universal themes of love, family, and what an individual truly values. I have made several short films--both fiction and nonfiction--for apprenticeships, local companies and organizations, and with friends. I come from a multi-cultural background. My father has Native-American and European blood, while my mother and her family are from El Salvador, with ties to France and seemingly every other corner of the world. I love hearing stories of my ancestors; sometimes they sound almost like myths, with events taking place that only seem to happen in books and legends, not in real life. I believe partaking in and listening to a good story--whether it's a true tale of an ancestor, or a tall tale read from the library--is not only a great way to pass the time, but also an opportunity to learn either from the mistakes or triumphs of others, and to gain new perspectives on the world around each of us.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because of the power that the Atonement of Jesus Christ gives to every individual. Jesus Christ suffered for every man and woman's sins, shortcomings, and feelings of inadequacy. Whether we are depressed, addicted, or merely feel alone, Jesus Christ and God love each of us and through the sacrifice of the Atonement, all can be comforted, can grow to change, and can become better, happier individuals. I also know that families can truly be together for all time and eternity, that this life is not the end, and that God has a plan for us to receive true happiness--and that plan is being surrounded by those we love forever, learning and growing together, and feeling the true happiness that comes from a God and Christ-centered existence.

How I live my faith

Being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is about spreading the joys of a Christ and God centered life. Service, I feel, is the best way to do this. God and Jesus love every single person who has been, is, and will be on this Earth, and their purpose is to help each of them find joy and a better life and come back to them. So our purpose should be the same. Whether it is helping a neighbor with their yardwork, speaking kind words to a stranger who seems alone or uncomfortable, or showing love and care to a family member in need, being a Mormon--more than anything--is about acting as Christ would, showing love to all, and sharing the message of joy that this gospel brings in every word and every deed.
