Hi I'm Gwen

I have always loved reading and writing. Reading parties and hiking are some of my favorite family activities. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a stay-at-home mom of three children with a wide range of ages. One child is in college, one is in high school, and one is not yet old enough for school. Between all of them, I feel like I get to experience all the years of motherhood at once. I enjoy freelance writing. Most of my published articles are about the local areas I've lived in. I also write and self-publish some fiction and poetry and maintain a blog. I try to spend at least an hour every day writing something. I love learning new things. Right now I'm learning how to knit, quilt, cook with quinoa and grow an herb garden. I love reading books about leadership skills and marketing, too. I enjoy music. My husband plays the cello a little. I play the piano. My children play the piano, the trumpet and the flute.

Why I am a Mormon

Life can be difficult sometimes. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints gives me a moral compass to help me make the best decisions I can for my family. It helps me balance all the many tasks in my life, inspires me to put my family first and spend quality time with them, and it helps me develop my talents and grow into the kind of person I want to be. Most of all, the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints give me hope when I fall short of my goals, or when life takes a dark turn. As long as I remember these teachings and stay focused on what Heavenly Father and Jesus want me to do, everything always works out. I am especially grateful for Jesus Christ. Because of him, when I make mistakes, I can repent and become clean again. I love the joy that comes from knowing I can become like Him someday.

How I live my faith

I work with the children in my ward. Some months I conduct the meetings. Other months I plan learning activities for the children or help make arrangements for teachers and special projects. One of my favorite parts of working with the children is the weekly singing time, where we all participate in learning songs that help us grow spiritually. Children are amazing people. I really love the impact they have on my own faith. I'm also learning how to conduct our ward choir. I recently discovered that I can make my own arrangements of songs I want our choir to sing. It's been a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to our Christmas program, although it's hard to narrow down a list of songs to sing. I wish we could learn them all. Some of us are looking forward to A Capella Christmas caroling this year.

How can we come to know our Father in Heaven?

Gwen
Growing closer to God is a day by day process. For me, it requires being as kind as I can in all the decisions I make in life. It also means I take time to learn about him by reading about him in the scriptures, listening to our special witnesses talk about him and most especially by praying to him. As I practice these things, the darkness of the world fades away and I know that He is close by, watching over me even when I cannot see him. This doesn't mean life will be easy, but it does mean I can get the help and the spiritual strength I need to face my personal challenges. Show more Show less
