Hi I'm Shelby

I grew up in Brigham City, Utah, and moved to Madison, Alabama at age 13. I have been a dancer all my life. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a student at Brigham Young University.I am a member of BYU's Contemporary Dance Theater, where we travel and perform in many cities inside and outside of the United States. I love all types of dancing, and I have experienced about any style. I am actually a Business major. I am studying Recreation Management in the Marriott School of Business. It is an incredible blessing to study dance and business at this amazing university. My husband and I met in a ballroom class here at BYU, and we have been incredibly happy ever since.

Why I am a Mormon

As a dancer, I have experienced many worldly environments. When I say worldly, I mean a bit vulgar, carnal, or places I don't feel uplifted. There have been times in my life where I want to stop living the standards of the church, pursue my dancing, and get on with my dreams. But it just doesn't make me happy. I find that when I become invested in my dancing, I also become selfish. I only find complete joy and happiness when I am consecrating my performances to my Savior... And that is what Mormonism teaches. It isn't about limiting our lives, it is about finding the happiest life we can live. Keeping the standards of the church, serving my fellow members, and learning more about my Savior, Jesus Christ, I find pure joy and lasting happiness. I find that I can be confident in my marriage when hard times come. I fell connected to both sides of my family because I know we will be together forever, even in the life to come. I am not afraid of the afterlife because I know my Heavenly Father loves me individually, and has a plan for me. I can look forward to my unknown path in life in faith because of the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I am so happy and grateful to be a Mormon.

How I live my faith

I have been incredibly blessed to be a part of Contemporary Dance Theater. Not only are we a performing company, our mission is to spread the light of Christ through our art form. Our intention is to not only entertain our audience, but show them how uplifting and rejuvenating dance, and other art forms can be in their lives. Last year, we had two opportunities to tour. We went to Beijing, China, where we performed, held outreaches, and taught the people we met. It is incredible to experience life with a whole new culture of people who also share the love of dance. Also, last June we toured around Nauvoo, Illinois and other areas close by. We performed along with the Young Performing Missionaries, participated in service outreaches, and learned about the saints at the time of Joseph Smith. Outside of the company, I also participate in Sunday church meetings. My husband and I attend a "married student ward," which means we attend classes with other students at BYU who are married. Some have young children, but mostly it is young couples whom we love and relate to very well.
