Hi I'm Jake

I'm a traveler. I collect hobbies. I'm a husband. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in Southern Utah, surrounded by the beauty of God's creations. I learned a great appreciation for nature from my dad and a love for all people from my mom. I've always been curious about the world and have a great love of learning. This has led me to take on many exciting adventures. I've been a white-water river guide, a photographer, a musician, a wanderer, and most recently, a husband. This has been the greatest adventure of all and I love my sweet wife and partner in crime. Currently we are taking a break from our studies to teach English in China with a volunteer program. Through the challenges of each adventure, I find comfort in drawing near to my wife and to the Savior.

Why I am a Mormon

Although I was raised in the Church, I have had to learn for myself of its truth. I have gone through periods of questioning, of wandering and wondering, how such a thing could be true: that God reached out to a 14 year old boy and charged him with the restoration of His gospel. I don't pretend to be without questions now—there are things that I don't understand. But I have found the fountain of all truth. I know for certain that this church is true. I am imperfect, as are all of the other members of the church, but the purpose of the church and the gospel is to prepare us to return to our Heavenly Father. I have learned that with every stumbling step I take toward the Savior, He comes running toward me in leaps and bounds. In other words, even though I won't ever become perfect in this life, Jesus Christ is thrilled with even the smallest evidence of progress, and he shows us so. I love him and I want to be like him.

How I live my faith

My life has been filled with blessings, one of the greatest of which has been the opportunity to gain strength by relying on the Savior. A week or so before my 16th birthday, my family was torn apart by divorce. Having my world come crashing down while in the middle of my sophomore year in high school was the biggest challenge I have ever faced. With my faith more than a little shaken and the weakness of my foundation revealed, I had to make a decision: would I allow my trust in the Lord fall? or would I make the most of this opportunity to get to know Him personally and be filled with His infinite love? After a time of shakiness, I was blessed with guidance from some of the most remarkable people I have ever met. These mentors were sent like angels from God to help me stand on my own feet rather than be shaken by my trials. I learned through that experience that our Heavenly Father knows us individually, perfectly, and with a pure, infinite love. My goal in life is to be an instrument for good the way that my mentors were to me. I want to always be ready to answer the call when God wants to reach out to one of His children through me.
