Hi I'm Gary

I'm a Computer Science major from the United States, but right now I'm off serving a mission in Toronto, Canada. I'm a mormon.

About Me

I'm the second of four kids from a family with deaf parents - so I grew up learning American Sign Language. I love computers. It absolutely fascinates me how mankind has manipulated computers and other digital devices to serve our interests worldwide. I'm a student majoring in Computer Science since I love how I learn something new every day that I walk into class. I'm looking to become a professional software engineer, probably programming in C++, but we'll see how that goes. My next love is politics. I stay current on news from several different sources, and follow electoral races avidly. I enjoy the Economist's news coverage, and I believe watching the Daily Show and the Colbert Report is a great way to end the day. One day I intend to run for public office, probably on the local level. I absolutely adore history. I love knowing the situations that lead to great men making the decisions they made. If I had to pick, I'd say I prefer United States history, but I like world history too. Off the top of my head, I'd say I look up to Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., and Otto von Bismarck. As far as other interests go, I enjoy running. In high school, I debated in Public Forum and dabbled in Extemporaneous Speaking (primarily domestic policy). I also played the alto saxophone for 5 years, but haven't touched it in a little while. I'm currently (2014) serving a full-time mission in Toronto, Canada. I completed a year of college before heading up here.

Why I am a Mormon

I first felt God's love when I was a young boy kneeling with my parents, learning to pray. I know that God loves us and wants to hear our prayers. Growing up, my father would occasionally give me blessings of comfort. Whenever he would do so, I would feel this deep sense of peace and calm. These spiritual experiences prepared me for when I was a teenager. At that time, I wanted to find out for myself if Jesus Christ was indeed my Savior and if Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ actually appeared to Joseph Smith back in 1820. As I read and pondered about the Book of Mormon, I took up its offer towards the end where it says, "When ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts. And when ye shall receive these things, ... ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost, ye may know the truth of all things." I decided to pray about it. I had a sincere heart (a belief that I would receive an answer) and real intent (willingness to act upon the answer), just as the scripture directs, and I prayed in the name of Jesus Christ. When I did these things, I felt something in my heart telling me these things were true. I was only 15 years old, but I had a powerful spiritual experience. I know that what I experienced was the influence of the Holy Ghost witnessing to me that Jesus is the Christ and that His gospel has been restored.

How I live my faith

I live my faith daily. Every single day is another opportunity to come closer to Christ. Christ's message is one of hope and improvement. I try my best to continually improve myself and follow Jesus Christ's perfect example. If I mess up, I know that He is always there for me. His Atonement, or sacrifice, allows me to replace any feelings of doubt, regret, fear, inadequacy, or guilt with that of peace and joy. I love reading scripture, because even if you've read a certain passage before, there's always something new that the passage can help with. There's always some new insight to be found. There's always a new application. I work hard to serve others by my actions and my example. I know that Christ wants us to love everyone, so I do my best to show that pure love of Christ to each and every person that I meet. I am currently (2014-2016) serving a full-time mission in the Canada Toronto Mission. I am sharing the word of God and inviting others to pray about it, to find out for themselves that it's true. I share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others, since they can only know of the happiness it brings if someone shares it with them.
