Hi I'm Jay Lawrence

I am from Reno, Nevada. I've been working as a professional drummer since age 15. Moreover, I am a Mormon!

About Me

My life has been blessed with a wonderful wife, six children, and twelve grandchildren. I love to read books that I think will make me a better person. I like to travel, visit with my family and take my wife out on dates. My passion is music in general, and drumming in particular. Though I frequently play in Orchestral/Classical, R & B, Country, Broadway, and Big Band genres, I especially love Latin Jazz (Tropical Salsa.) "This Monument of Faith", a building dedication hymn I composed, won 1st place in the Church's Hymn contest in 2012. I've been fortunate to record over a hundred CDs. My last jazz album as a leader climbed to #7 on the American Jazz Radio Airplay charts. Currently I teach at three Colleges/Universities as a music professor. My mission was paid for by playing percussion and drums for celebrity shows like Loretta Lynn, Liberace, Tom Jones, Cher, Andy Gibb, Sammy Davis Jr., etc. I was in the orchestra that played for "Sandlot" and other movies. Since I started working so much at such a young age I didn't finish college until I was 56 years old. I did however finally graduate Summa Cum Laude from Utah Valley University. Music has been a great, stimulating challenge and a rewarding, joyful pursuit. We know we are to emulate our Creator and do what He does. He creates, and that is what composers and Jazz musicians do (to a lesser degree!)

Why I am a Mormon

Our Father in Heaven's loving plan for His children involves the miracle of His Beloved Son sacrificing all, to give us hope in the victory over sin and death. It excites me that we have the same organization that Christ instituted in the meridian of time, such as prophets, apostles, missionary work, proxy ordinations for the deceased, the laying on of hands, emblems of the Last Supper and so much more! (Ephesians 4:11-14) I love the affirmations of the Spirit which I feel when engaging in activities such as reading the Holy Scriptures, fasting, serving in the Temple, and at Church meetings. Jesus Christ is my Savior and this is His Restored Church!

How I live my faith

It is a great joy to serve in the Church of Jesus Christ in these latter days. My current calling is 1st counselor in the Bishopric, my congregation's leadership. Serving and helping brothers and sisters progress spiritually is very satisfying. The Restored Gospel has great power to change lives! I read the scriptures and words of living Prophets daily because of the direction, inspiration, eternal perspective, and purpose they provide me. I am so grateful for saving truths, the infinite Atonement of the Savior, and access to Heaven through prayer. Though I'm not a perfect individual at all, I have never smoked, drank coffee, tea or alcohol, or used drugs in spite of working in clubs since age 15. My parents teachings about the Word of Wisdom gave me so much protection from these harmful substances. Many of my students are teen aged young men and therefore I've experienced many opportunities to encourage them to serve missions before they pursue their music careers. I anxiously look forward to serving missions with my wife when I retire from performing, recording, and teaching.

What is the purpose of the welfare services of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?

Jay Lawrence
God loves His children and desires to bless us temporally as well as spiritually. Christians are always admonished to care for the needy and poor. It is only possible to help others when we ourselves reach a degree of stability and self-reliance. The principle of work brings many and varied blessings to ourselves and others. Show more Show less
