Hi I'm Marsha

I was born and raised in Point Fortin, a small town in the southern part of the island of Trinidad.

About Me

The first time I really ran competitively was when my dad told me he would by me a bike if I placed first in my elementary school's 5k run. As a 6th grader that was something worth running for. Another segue here. As a youth I competed in cricket and by the time I was 13 I was playing for a competitive team of older teens. My coach thought I might be good at the javelin after seeing me play cricket. In 1994 I was recruited to by BYU for track; however my SAT scores weren't good enough so I was unable to attend the university initially. I’ve always believed that when a door shuts a window opens, and in this case I was able to attend Ricks College and transfer over to BYU a year and a half later. The Lord blesses each of us with amazing talents. Fortunately there’s an event for all-around athletes: the heptathlon—a seven-event track and field competition. If you’re good at enough events, you can be great in the heptathlon. I competed in the Olympic Games in 2000 and in 2004 representing Trinidad and Tobago. I was unable to compete in the 2008 or 2012 games because I was starting my family, but now I'm training to make the Olympic team again in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I will be 42 by then. Professionally, I worked Gang Prevention for a local school district, teach truancy school and teach a drug and alcohol prevention class for two school districts. I also volunteered on the crisis team for my county for 10 years.

Why I am a Mormon

I was first introduced to the LDS church back in 1994. I really struggled with the idea that there could be a prophet on Earth in our day. For five years I struggled with this, and after wondering about it and searching for answers, I finally decided to pray about it with a sincere heart. I found what I was looking for, the gospel of Jesus Christ. I received a clear, undeniable answer that the church was true through the Holy Ghost.

How I live my faith

I am grateful for a loving, supporting husband who loves me, no matter what. He is always supportive and giving of his time. Because of him I am a better person. My husband and my three kids are my universe. I am blessed with three amazing kids the Lord has entrusted to me. I love my family. Knowing my purpose as a mother and wife, along with the Lord's plan for us, guides me in the right direction. I very dedicated to whatever I do. I'm dedicated to my family first and foremost. I try to make sure their needs are being met as a wife and a mother. I sometimes fall short but know I can try again tomorrow. I also know that I can always work a little harder to be a good wife and mother. As an athlete I have learned to never give up even when it seems impossible. With the Lord on my side all things are possible as long as I'm doing my part in sync with His plan. I live my faith through my actions and words. I am not perfect, but through Him I gain my strength to try a little harder each day.
