Hi I'm Judy Thomas

I walked my first marathon at sixty. I am an educator. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

A few years ago I stitched two pillows. One said, "Oh Canada, my home and native land." The other said, "God bless America, land that I love." I was blessed to be born in the north but have lived nearly fifty years now in the states, privileged to be part of two great countries. I am a widow, a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. I have a passion for teaching and during my career as an educator, I have loved watching the faces of first and second graders as they "get" a concept and enjoy a lesson. I've been an avid walker for thirty years and even walked three marathons since the age of sixty. I enjoy a great book, digging in the earth and serving others.

Why I am a Mormon

Though I was born into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I have found that it is important to make certain to find out for myself that the church is true. Through sincere personal prayer and study of the scriptures, I have come to realize that these doctrines and principles are indeed true. So I guess when you think about it, I'm a convert. Besides that, living the precepts of Heavenly Father's Plan, simplifies life. It's not just a social club that we move in and out of but a way of believing and living that brings meaning to our eternal lives. It brings peace to my heart to know that I can live with my husband and family forever. When my husband died two years ago, I found that I was more intertwined with his whole being than anyone could have explained to me. It took time to re-invent myself, to figure out who I am without him. Through solid determination but mostly with help from my Heavenly Father, His Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost, I have been able to once again find joy and a purpose in life. Do I miss my husband? Absolutely! Every day! But I have courage to move forward. I love having a living prophet, President Thomas S. Monson, who gives us counsel for our day, using solid gospel principles. Through it all, living the gospel is definitely a win-win situation! That's why I'm a Mormon!

How I live my faith

Raising eight children, being a wife and devoted church member has kept me plenty busy. I have enjoyed serving in the children and youth organizations as a leader and teacher. I've organized scout camps, girls' camps and pinewood derbies. I've been a leader in the church's women's organization and loved teaching my wonderful sisters in the gospel. As part of the way we take care of each other, I've helped with funerals, dinners and babysitting for new mothers and those who are ill or need a listening ear. I am currently serving a full time mission for the church. As with the other missionaries serving throughout the world, I support myself financially and have left family and friends at home while I serve my Heavenly Father and look for opportunities to invite His children to come unto Christ. I continually strive to always be motivated by Christ-like love as I serve others. I'm certainly far from perfect but I feel hope knowing that I can always keep trying.
