Hi I'm Ben Barfuss

I'm Canadian. I'm a missionary in Salt Lake City. I love baseball and volleyball. I love leather. I love music. And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was born in Winnipeg into my family of two parents and two older sisters. I love sports, baseball and volleyball are my favourite to play. I've played baseball since I was 5 years old and volleyball since I was 10. I love to listen to and play all music. I've played guitar for about 4 years now, still not very good though, and I like to sing as well. I just graduated high school and I am now on a mission with the church serving in Salt Lake City for two years. Another one of my interests is in leather goods. I haven't been able to do much leather work because it is very time consuming and expensive but I love leather. It started with leather baseball gloves and moved onto shoes, books, watches, belts, cases, and bags. I've had a number of jobs over the past couple years. My first job was delivering the paper in Winnipeg and I started when I was 8 or 9 and continued that for 5-6 years. I was a gas station attendant, did auto detailing, I worked at a shoe store and a sports apparel/equipment store, I was a concession stand cashier at Calgary Stampede and my last job before I left for my mission was landscaping. After my mission I hope to go to university and learn about business, possibly finance or management or investing, still not sure. I have helped out as a cub scout leader, I have coached baseball teams, I have been the captain of most of my baseball teams and some volleyball teams. I'm very grateful for my life and I love to make other people happy and love their life.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because this church and these teaching give me joy. My best friends I became friends with because of the church. My family is stronger and loves each other better because of the church. My life is more meaningful and enjoyable because of the church. I was born into the church so at the base that's why I am a Mormon, because my parents were, but I am still a Mormon because through the Gospel of Jesus Christ and His Atonement I feel joy, understanding, peace, comfort, and love. I am still a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints because what I have learned from my teachers in the church, the prophets, my leaders, the scriptures, and prayer have helped me to know that the church is true and the spirit testified and continues to testify to me that it is indeed the most true church on this earth. Everyone has trials to go through and everyone experiences pain sometimes and I have too, but because of the church I can get through my trials and difficulties and pain much quicker if I choose to use the things that the church teaches like prayer, scripture study, and repentance. It is such a great comfort to know that everything I experience my Savoir Jesus Christ has experienced that exact feeling as well and he can help me to get through it and feel happy again. I am a Mormon because I am weak and I need strength from God in my life every day and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches me how I can receive that strength and become more like Jesus Christ who was the strongest man to ever walk the earth.

How I live my faith

I was born into the church with both my parents being members. The church has influenced my life immensely in so many ways and without I wouldn't be who I am today. I chose to be baptized when I was 8 years old by my father and I'm extremely glad I made that decision. When I turned 12 I got to join the young men's program, which is for boys aged 12-18, start home teaching with my dad, and I got the privilege and responsibility to hold the Aaronic Priesthood. As a young man I served as a leader in my young men's groups and had loads of fun with all the camps and service and activities. I now am serving as a missionary in Salt Lake City and am learning to speak Spanish to teach the Spanish speakers of the Salt Lake City Mission the great message we Latter-day Saints have to share. I love sharing the gospel and the joy it brings to others. I strive to be like Jesus Christ our Savior by trying to love everyone and trying to serve everyone.

Why is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called Mormons or Mormonism?

Ben Barfuss
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is called Mormons or Mormonism because we believe in a book called the Book of Mormon, and so we got the nickname of Mormons because of our belief in that book. We are Christians because we do believe in Jesus Christ and He is the center of our beliefs and the proper name of the church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and we do carry his name in our title. Why was a Restoration of the Gospel needed? Haven’t we always had the Bible?

Ben Barfuss
The Restoration of the Gospel was needed because there wasn't a fullness of the Gospel on the earth. There was no priesthood, which is the authority that God gives worthy men to act in His name to perform saving ordinances. There was no prophet that could receive revelation from God to speak His words. Although the Bible is true and an amazing book with plenty of revelation and good teachings it needed something to supplement it to help testify of Jesus Christ and the need for His Atonement, it was like having cake without ice cream, a burger without fries, peanut butter without the jelly, still good, but not as good. The Restoration brought back the fullness of the Gospel with the priesthood, a prophet, and a supplement to the Bible, called the Book of Mormon, that helps people to understand the word of the Bible and understand who Jesus Christ is. Today we have a true prophet of God on the Earth named Thomas S. Monson and he receives revelation from God to guide and direct the church on a path of righteousness. Show more Show less
