Hi I'm Michael

I'm a scientist and father to seven children. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in a small farming community in Idaho. My father, a native of Utah, moved the family there when I was six years old. He eventually became an owner in a seed production company, a career that has allowed him to travel the world. My personal travels began as a missionary in Thailand. After two years, I returned home, and began a long path of university education in biological sciences. This path would have been difficult without the company of my wife and our seven children. The rapid pace of discovery in my scientific field amazes me! With so much information, comprehension is the challenge of the coming generation. I've recently started collecting wooden spoons of various styles.

Why I am a Mormon

My father and his father before were lifelong members of the Mormon church. My mother, however, joined the church in her early 20s. This allowed me to consider my membership throughout my youth. When I was starting my university education prior to my missionary experience, I struggled with knowing the truthfulness of the Mormon faith. Through careful study of the Book of Mormon, accompanied by humble prayer, I obtained a sure witness that what I had learned throughout my childhood was true. God does answer prayers. He wants us to fulfill our full potential by following the gospel of Jesus Christ. I have also come to know that all knowledge comes from God. As my understanding of this truth grows, I hope to see how this knowledge is to be used for His purposes.

How I live my faith

The focus of my faith is on my family. I believe that presenting a consistent example of faith-based living within the framework of a balanced lifestyle will help them most in this difficult modern environment. I also enjoy my church participation. Whether teaching youth classes, serving my neighbors, or leading a congregation, the spiritual rewards bring joy and satisfaction to my life. We recently hosted the local missionaries for an evening in our home. It made me reflect on my experience as a missionary in Thailand, and wonder about the experience my oldest son is currently having as a missionary far away from home.
