Hi I'm Karissa

I'm a Cosmetologist. I was born and raised a farm girl. I love my family, laughing, and being outdoors. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am currently attending school at BYUH and studying Business Management. Because I am a Cosmetologist, I hope to someday have my own salon. I've loved every minute of living on the islands and soak up all the culture I can find. I'm a die-hard farm girl and I miss my family every day.

Why I am a Mormon

I may have been born into the church, but I had to decide for myself if it was true. One day I was watching a video and in this video there was a man and a woman. The woman was asking the man why he was struggling to believe the teachings of the Gospel that he had grown up in. He said that it was hard for him to believe something that he could not see. She covered the man's eyes and asked, "Can you see me?" The man laughed and answered, "No." She responded, "Then how do you know I am here?" Tears filled my eyes and I could feel a burning in my chest. At that moment I realized that I already knew my Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ where there even though I could not see them. Since that day I've witnessed the blessings that come from paying tithing or offering a small and simple prayer. The Lord has protected my family in numerous ways. Just a couple years ago my brother and I were both in car accidents that officials couldn't believe we walked away from. I've listened to the promptings in my heart and I've been guided to places, such as the BYUH campus, that have totally changed my life. Places that I know I need to be. When I think about this Gospel there is that same burning sensation in my chest and love in my heart that I cannot deny. I know that the Savior gave all that he had so that we could have the blessing of the atonement in each of our lives because He loves us.

How I live my faith

I really love being at a church college. BYU- Hawaii has students from all around the world and there are so many different background stories of how they found the church. At BYU-Hawaii we are given the opportunity to participate in numerous ward activities throughout the week. Including: a ward prayer together on Sunday nights, on Monday nights we have a spiritual thought, prayer, and fun activity that we do called Family Home Evening (FHE). Every day our teachers incorporate the gospel into our classes. Even something like accounting, or math. I live my faith daily by sharing my testimony and remembering prayers as well as scripture study. I remember that the Savior loves me and I live the commandments of this Gospel.

What are Mormon church services like? Are visitors allowed at church meetings? Can I attend church?

Anyone is welcome to attend! Being on the islands, there are so many people that visit for vacations. Many people reach out and ask why there is a whole college dedicated to the church. We invite them to join us and see for their selves. There is a peace and comfort there that many can experience. We're very welcoming people and would love to meet you. Show more Show less
