Hi I'm Gretel Tam

I grew up in Hong Kong and Mainland China. I am a college student. I love to doodle. I am a Mormon.

About Me

I am currently a full-time missionary in the Oakland/San Francisco Mission. I serve the Chinese community here in the Bay. My family is from Hong Kong and I grew up in Guangzhou, China. I have four siblings and I love them very much. I'm obsessed with museums, books, colors and (good) yogurt.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised in the LDS church. My mother was converted to the religion when two missionaries knocked on her door in Hong Kong when she was four. I have questioned this gospel many times growing up. But after every falling short, I always find myself coming back with a stronger testimony. I am a Mormon because I believe everyone can change and God doesn't; I am a Mormon because I believe in eternal marriage and family; I am a Mormon because I have come to know my Heavenly Father through personal trials and experience and know His unconditional love for me.

How I live my faith

During the time that I lived in China, It was sensitive to talk about religion. Some aspects of my lifestyle seemed weird to others because I was not able to explain them thoroughly. At first it troubled me, but after praying to my Heavenly Father for comfort and guidance, I knew that I should continue to live the gospel regardless of my surroundings. I went to church on Sundays, even if that meant missing school; I avoided tea, even though it contradicted my traditions; I did not use foul language, even if that meant being distanced sometimes. By obeying the small and simple commandments, my faith grew stronger and my life changed. I was so much happier. I found myself surrounded by people who love me, and I also started to find a purpose in my life that kept me optimistic and moving forward. Knowing that I am a child of a loving God changed the way I look at myself and the way I act.
