Hi I'm David Merrell

I was born New Year's Eve in 1980. I grew up in Virginia, as the 3rd of 8 children. I'm a Family Medicine resident. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in Virginia, USA as the 3rd of 8 children (5 brothers and twin sisters). Our house was always lively. From early on I developed a love for the outdoors and sports. I played soccer and wrestled through my high school years and even played 2 years of collegiate soccer. I enjoy camping and hiking and received my Eagle Scout award from the Boy Scouts of America. I served a 2 year mission in the Canada Toronto West Mission. Upon returning from my mission I completed a 4 year degree in business finance and went on to medical school. I'm currently finishing my training to become a family medicine physician. I'm a husband and proud father of 3 beautiful children. Aside from family time I currently enjoy most athletic pursuits, outdoors activities, and home projects such as remodeling our home or building furniture.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon for 3 main reasons. First the Holy Ghost has born witness to my heart and mind that this gospel is his work. While I have not experienced one life changing event such as Saul's in the new testament, my life has been filled with numerous small testimony building events that have shown me that God lives and that he has restored gospel truths and priesthood authority to this church. There is a joy and light that comes from studying and living the complete gospel of Christ. I have attended many other christian and non-christian churches, and while uplifting and often Christ centered, I have never felt the same completeness as here in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Second, it makes sense. Everything makes sense from a logical perspective when looking at the entire gospel message. This clarity comes through sincere and prayerful seeking, and is freeing to the soul and mind when found. Much of the confusion that is seen surrounding many of Christ's doctrines are clarified through his chosen leaders - a prophet and apostles. I believe that God has called modern prophets and apostles, as he did anciently, to help guide and instruct his children how to properly follow Christ. The modern prophet and apostles are his chosen servants on the earth today, just as Peter, James, John and the others were anciently. As I follow their instruction I come closer to the Savior. Third, and most importantly I have come to personally know my Savior, Jesus Christ through this church. I know that he lived and died to pay the price for my sins. I know that he lives again, and that he has prepared a way for me to come back to live with my Heavenly Father. While my relationship with the Savior is deeply personal and without affiliation to any organization, it is because of the "Mormon" church that I have come to know of him!

How I live my faith

I try to live my faith through church service and daily living My wife and I currently serve as the Marriage and Family Development instructors in our ward. We enjoy the shared calling as this gives us a chance to work together in our lesson preparation and instruction. The gospel of Jesus Christ makes for excellent teaching material and applying the lesson material to my life and marriage has provided me and my marriage with a strong foundation. Participating in the rest of our worship services also serves to make me a better husband, father, son, friend, and citizen. Living by faith for me is so much more than simply attending church meetings. For me involving the Lord in daily living is living by faith. It's taking those quiet moments during a hectic day to see the hand of the Lord and thank him for taking interest in my life. When I actively seek to do what He has asked me to do through the scripture teachings, modern prophets and apostles, and through personal revelation, I feel his love and direction. Acting on that direction in faith allows me to overcome any challenge.
