Hi I'm Houston

I am a student studying biology at BYU-Idaho.

About Me

I am a student who loves to learn new things and excel at what ever I decide to put my mind to, only sometimes it is hard to decide what to devote my time doing. I love to read novels for fun and study and read from text books. I like to be active outdoors as well whether it is running, biking, hiking, etc. I love dogs even though I don't have one right now I will as soon as possible. I have a twin brother, an older brother and older sister with families of their own for a total of 4 nephews and 2 nieces. My parents are divorced and both remarried to members of the Church in the temple. My dad and step mom are currently living in Muscat Oman and they are loving being very active in such a small branch there.

Why I am a Mormon

Really, why I am Mormon is simple, I have never really known anything else. However, having learned a lot about other religions and methods of faith over the years I am grateful for the knowledge I have been so blessed to have been born with my feet planted on the right path. I believe and feel the Gospel is true and an expression of God's love for us and His overwhelming desire for his children to return to Him. That said, I also believe the Church isn't necessarily always the right path for everyone. At different points in our lives it becomes more or less important or right or necessary. It is not really the Church that matters but the Gospel and our relationship with our Father in Heaven. I am Mormon because no matter where I am in my life I try to live like the Church and Gospel is the right path for me at that exact moment. It is a conscious and difficult choice I have to try to make every day. Some days I don't do that an other days, regrettably few, I do and those are the days I feel alive and happy and those are the days I learn what it means to be a child our Heavenly Father and feel his love and care for me and his Gospel.

How I live my faith

One of my favorite callings I have had in the past, but don't currently have, is Sunday school teacher. It is fun to look for ways to relate gospel topics to myself as well as members of the classes.

What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

The Word of Wisdom is a new commandment given in our days that we should abstain from certain things that the rest of the world deems acceptable, namely, tobacco, alcohol, coffee and tea, and illegal drugs. Members of the Church as well as its detractors like to focus on the health benefits or draw backs to each of these things and the Word of Wisdom as a whole. But I think that is a mistake. Sure abstaining from some of these things makes us healthier but some of the others are necessarily unhealthy either. The basic idea is that there should be a moderation in all things. What is truly important about the Word of Wisdom is our ability, or lack of ability, to show our God that we are willing to follow His commandments regardless of how the world may feel about them or view them. Are we willing to discover for ourselves that such commandment really came from a prophet of God and is therefore the will of God for us? And then are we willing to act on that new knowledge to show our Father in Heaven that we love Him and know he has our best in mind? What matters is our willingness to learn and then obey.. or not. In whom should we have faith?

The obvious answer is of course to have faith in God and his Son Jesus Christ. It is their strength and love that can aid us in our worst and best moments. But we should always be willing to have faith in not only them but in ourselves as well. We have in us the ability to direct the course of our own lives but if we don't first believe that we have the ability to make correct or good decisions it makes life all that much more difficult and slow the rate of our progression in life's goals that we could otherwise enjoy. AND we must also have faith in the loved ones that surround us because if you don't have the same faith in them I don't think you can truly call them "loved" ones. Faith allows us to better live our lives and how much better our lives will be if we could just learn to love, trust and have faith in ourselves, those around us and in our God. Show more Show less

Why was a Restoration of the Gospel needed? Haven’t we always had the Bible?

The Restoration was needed to bring back that same organization and authority which Jesus Christ established while on this Earth. While we did still have the Bible through all that time the authority Christ gave to his Apostles was lost through the years and the Restoration gave that gift to act in the Name of God again to His children. What is faith?

Faith is hard and faith is work and faith is knowing that no matter what happens our Father in Heaven loves us and cares for us and will take us and make more of us no matter who we are or where we are in our lives. Those are all true and important but I think what faith truly amounts to is a daily, hourly, and minute to minute conscious decision. We have to decide to have faith. It could be in anything but it is a conscious state and means being constantly aware of who we are and where we are and where we want to be. Human nature defaults to a state of unconsciousness and idle passing of time. Faith is the opposite and it is a state of being that helps us live and live well and meaningfully with other people all around us. Show more Show less
