Hi I'm Derek Law

I'm a husband, father, business man, musician, ice cream lover : ), and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have a wife, and daughter who I am head over heals in love with. They are by far the best part of my life. My perfect day is having nothing to do but hangout with my wife, and play with my daughter. I work full-time as a financial analyst, and I'm an entrepreneur. I love finding solutions to people's problems and making people's lives better and I believe that business is a great way to do that. I'm also a singer-songwriter. Music is so powerful! Good music does so much to lift my spirits and make my life enjoyable. I love sharing that with others. I love football, basketball, chocolate chip cookies, and ice cream. I believe that a day without ice cream is a wasted day. I also believe that eating ice cream in moderation will probably help me have more days to live and enjoy ice cream. As you can tell finding the right balance here is a challenge for me to say the least : ) I believe that life is a journey that we should enjoy, and I have been blessed to find so much joy in this journey. God has blessed me so much.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I've read the Book of Mormon. I prayed and asked God if it was true, and I did it with the intention of giving up anything I had to in order to follow the truth. He told me it was true through the Holly Spirit which told me it was true through feelings of peace, joy, and love. I've noticed that I cannot genuinely serve someone without feeling those same feelings. Through studying scriptures, praying, and acting on God's word I've come to know Jesus Christ. I've turned to Him with my sins, my pain, my sorrow, and my weaknesses, and I have felt Him heal me. I know that he suffered and died for us so that He could save us from our sins and comfort us. There are so many terrible things in this world that seek to bring us and our families misery. Being "Mormons", members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, has helped me and my family avoid much of the misery that comes from those influences. For example my children don't have an alcoholic father because God has commanded me to abstain from drugs and alcohol through his prophets. I know this will save my family a lot of heart ache. There are other hardships that can't be avoided. For example I have loved one's that have passed away unavoidably. In all of these situations being a Mormon helps me find peace in my afflictions. It has given me the hope that I will see my loved ones again. I believe that all bad things can be overcome by following Jesus Christ. Nothing has brought me more joy than following Jesus Christ with my family, and I truly believe that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is Christ's church. In fact I know it is. I invite you to read the Book of Mormon and pray to ask God if it is true. I promise you that if you are willing to do whatever it takes to follow the answer God gives you, He will tell you through your thoughts and feelings that it is true. As you follow your answer and follow Jesus Christ you will find happiness.

How I live my faith

I start my day with a prayer. I pray that God watches over my family, and that He will help me recognize opportunities to serve the people around me that day. I thank Him for all of the marvelous blessings his given me. On my commute to work I listen to audio versions of the Bible and the Book of Mormon. I also listen to audio talks given by modern day prophets, servants of God that teach us how to be safe and happy. This always sets such a great tone for my day, and I learn so much about God's plan for me. Throughout the day I look for ways to do God's will, and I do my best to keep the commandments that he has given me. I also try my best to listen to the Holly Spirit which invites me to do good through my thoughts and feelings. When I make wrong choices I repent. I try to do better and God forgives me. As a family we try kneel to pray together, and study the Book of Mormon every day after I return from work. We learn together how we can become a stronger, more unified family. I finish my day by praying again by myself and with my wife. I try to go back through my day and thank God specifically for the blessings he has given me that day. I give a tithe (10% of my gross income) to God, and I try to give more when I am able. This is an absolute privilege for me. God helps me stretch the 90% I keep further than if I'd simply kept the 100% and gone it alone. I know He does more good with that money than I could ever do had I kept it. I am grateful that He allows us the opportunity to give. I participate in the Boy Scout organization in my area. I absolutely love working with these young men, ages 12-18. We have activities each week that help build the boys in all aspects of life. It's a blast for me to be able to work with them. Many of them come to church. I serve there helping them learn about how they can follow Jesus Christ. I usually come away feeling like they've taught me more than I've taught them. It's one of the highlights of my life.
