Hi I'm Ken

I grew up in California and Utah. I am a professional engineer, college mentor, husband, and father of 8. I am a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up a carpenters son. Being interested in machinery, I went to college and became an engineer. I have designed industrial automation. I write about my career to encourage youth to consider engineering. My family enjoyed music; piano, violin, guitar, cello, bass, flute. We have a family folk and bluegrass band (just for fun). My life hobbies include skiing, hiking, cycling, photography, and family history. My wife and I have enjoyed raising eight children. They bring us great joy. We learn much from them. I appreciate my heritage; my genealogical pedigree. My parents are dead now, but I love and honor them.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born a Mormon, but that is not why I am a Mormon. I am a Mormon because of the doctrine about God, Jesus Christ, and my part in Heavenly Father's plan. I am a Mormon because, according to Mormon doctrine, I can continue to grow and participate beyond death in eternity in the kind of life that God lives, if I pursue that right path. As an engineer and scientist, the universe, God's creations, are exciting to me. I want to learn all about them. Here on Earth, God gives us freedom to choose and does not force us to do things His way, but I have found that whenever I do things His way, I feel confirmation from the Holy Ghost that it was right, and I feel peace, joy, comfort, a feeling of eternal home, a love beyond human love, a love that humans can taste and look forward to feeling more fully in eternity. In addition to these spiritual experiences, the Mormon Plan of Salvation and Exaltation makes sense to me; it is very reasonable. God, as my Father, wants me to have all that is best for me. He wants me to have all that He has. The Mormon Plan of Salvation, through the Atonement of Jesus Christ provides a way to return to God. I believe the universe to be an orderly place, a place of righteousness, not wicked domination. Our access to the universe is contingent on our choosing to obey the laws of righteousness that govern the universe. I believe that we have seeds of greatness in us, divinity, truth, and when we seek and live for it, we find it through Gods sources including scriptures, prophets, prayers, and faithful persons. I am a Mormon because of the deep abiding peace that I know that I am on a true wonderful journey to be all that I can be, and to help others achieve this also. I am a Mormon because I honor my father and my mother and their faith in God.

How I live my faith

I have been a Mormon all my life. I was taught to pray and did so, usually when I was young. At about age 10, on an evening when I jumped into bed without prayer, the Spirit of the Lord prompted me with, "Are you, or are you not, going to be a praying member of this church?" I made the choice to jump out of bed and pray, and I try to speak with God every day. It has blessed my life. I have served in the church as a Sunday School teacher, a Scoutmaster, a full-time missionary, and a bishop. It is a blessing to serve and lift others and to see the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ come alive in others, and in myself. At home, we pray together, read the scriptures together, and go to church together. When by myself, I study the words of ancient and modern prophets. I feel the love of God, and the truth of revelation through the Holy Ghost. Through prayer, study, and simple spiritual promptings received in peaceful moments, I know that God is real and that He loves me and my family. I find great comfort and strength in the words of modern day prophets who absolutely know the word of God and what I need to do to live a stable, righteous life. When I make mistakes, I am grateful for the atonement of Jesus Christ, to make me clean again, and help me back not he right path. I love Him.
