Hi I'm Steven Jay Merrill

I grew up in Tucson, Arizona. I spent 28 years in the Air Force as an chaplain and lived in 13 different places. I'm a Mormon!

About Me

I'm first and foremost a husband and a father! My wife and I have four boys, 3 daughters-in-law and 2 beautiful grand daughters. My wife is my high school sweetheart and I've known her since we were children. She's the best teammate in life any man could ever hope for. I spent 28 years in t he Air Force and traveled the globe. I served as a chaplain and was the doctor of souls! My Dad passed on his love of God, family, sports and country to me. Being an Air Force chaplain was a perfect fit! I love baseball, basketball and sports competition. I played high school and collegiate baseball. I've coached baseball at all levels from college down to t-ball. When you have four boys it's time to get off the bench and get involved. I loved coaching my boys and their buddies! When I retired from the Air Force I taught AF JROTC and coached baseball...I love those kids! In many ways you become a life coach in helping young people make sense of this earth life. I'm now headed to South Africa to serve a church mission with my wife. What a wonderful opportunity

Why I am a Mormon

My family is deeply religious and I was raised in a very active Mormon family. My father has pioneer heritage and he was raised in the church. My grand father died when my Dad was14 years old. He and his brothers struggled and strayed from the faith. My mother was raised Dutch Reform and felt strongly that her children should be raised in a Christian home. My mother was the one who became very interested in exploring Mormonism because of the example of my grandmother. It was my mother who sought out missionaries from the church and my father agreed to join in listening to the teachings of the gospel. My mother was baptised and my father became very active in his faith. At the time I was about 5 years old. From my youth I had a deep love for the Savior and his teachings. When I was in my teen years I really wanted to know for myself whether The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was the the true church as it claimed to be. I decided to put God to the test as Joseph Smith had done. I had a desire to know from the author of all truth and I took my petitions to God in prayer. I had an undeniable spiritual experience that confirmed to my heart and soul that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God as he claimed. I knew the Book of Mormon was true and that I was to serve a full time mission to share my testimony with anyone who would listen. I spent two years in Canada preaching the gospel. I loved and still love teaching the doctrines of the church because they answer questions of the soul. Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going after this life is over? What is my role as a husband and father? How does obedience to God's commandments lead to ultimate freedom? Can I really live with my family forever? I read from the scriptures daily and I can testify that God lives and that he sent his son, Jesus Christ, to die and atone for our sins so that we can overcome the effects of sin. I love the Lord!

How I live my faith

Faith is a verb and requires action on our part! I have so many friends both members of the church and those who have respect for the way I live my life. The greatest joy I have in this life is to assist someone else that needs encouragement in dealing with the hard knocks of life scripturally referred to as trials. I've certainly had my share of trials that God has allowed me to have in order to test and strengthen my faith. I've had the honor of visiting the sick and lowly of heart in the hospital, psychiatric wards, and in the homes of those who struggle. We are all children of a loving Heavenly Father and he wants us to bless the lives of our brothers and sisters here on the earth. In a very real sense we become guardian angels to and for each other. I've coached youth sports in Okinawa Japan, Mississippi, Colorado, Alabama, Utah, Ohio, Washington DC and Arizona. I love working with youth and watching them improve and develop physically, emotionally and spiritually. I really feel God's love and he has blessed my life so profoundly it is a joy to "give back" by serving others. I love to teach! I've preached, taught Sunday School, Book of Mormon and Biblical studies to students from 10 to 94!! I'm a disciple of Jesus Christ and I know him as my Lord and Savior.
