Hi I'm Mark

I am an actuary, a composer, a husband and a daddy of daughters only. I love being a Mormon!

About Me

I am a husband and a daddy of four daughters. I am an actuary by day (in other words, I do insurance math). By night, I love to compose music. I have lived internationally a couple times and have done some traveling. I love to associate with good people from around the world and to learn about each person's culture.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon for several reasons. First, the Holy Spirit has clearly witnessed to me that the Book of Mormon is true and from God. It was written by ancient prophets on the American Continent, but Jesus Christ was clearly the editor in chief. Whenever I read the Book of Mormon, this knowledge is again confirmed to my mind and heart by the Holy Ghost. By finding out that the Book of Mormon is true, I also found out that Joseph Smith (who translated it) was a true prophet who communicated with God, that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is Christ's church restored by Him, that the prophets who followed Joseph Smith, including Thomas Monson, are also true prophets, and that the doctrine and covenants taught and administered by His church are from God. This chain of understanding is why the Book of Mormon is sometimes referred to as the keystone of our religion. You can find out for yourself if all of it is true (or false) by doing just one thing: reading (and thinking about and praying about) the Book of Mormon. I do not have the answers to every spiritual question. However, because I know the Book of Mormon is true I can look past the things I do not understand and move forward with faith. In addition to my knowledge gained through study and prayer, my experiences in living the Gospel also have a huge impact on my faith. Jesus said, "by their fruits ye shall know them." That is another way that I know that I am in the right path. When I live by what is taught in this church, my life is better in a million ways. For example, when I pray to my Father in Heaven with sincerity I receive guidance and peace. He also communicates to me (and everyone who will hear) through the words of living prophets and apostles. They always seem to know exactly what my family and I need to hear. Thankfully, as much as I allow Him to be, God is intimately involved in my life through both of these channels of communication. Being a Mormon makes my life better.

How I live my faith

For the last couple of years, my main assignment in the Church has been to teach all the high school age youth from our congregation. These youth are amazing! Every morning before high school they come to church at 6:30 in the morning to study the scriptures. I see great things in store for them, both temporally and spiritually. Of course, teaching the youth every morning has required that I be (more) diligent in my own study of the scriptures. This is a huge blessing as it has opened the door for more consistent spiritual guidance and revelation from my Heavenly Father. Having that help and that eternal perspective makes all the difference in my happiness and my effectiveness. Our church assignments are always changing, so at some point I will be asked to do something else. On the other hand, my calling and husband and father will never go away. I love my wife and my daughters and I love spending time with them. This is the most important part of my life.
