Hi I'm Ty

I grew up in Henderson, Nevada. I am a husband, a father, and a structural engineer. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was born in Utah, but have lived in Houston, Texas; Henderson, Nevada; and on the Central Coast of California. I am a father of 4 wonderful children (2 boys and 2 girls), and a grandfather to 10. My God and my family are the most important things in my life. I have a degree in Civil Engineering and for the past nearly 30 years have been employed as a structural engineer in the design, testing and manufacturing of structures for solid rocket motors. I love my job and am currently working on the Space Launch System for NASA. I enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, computers, hiking and backpacking, reading, and being with my family.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into a Latter-Day Saint family. Both of my parents were faithful members of the church and so I grew up as a Mormon with the teachings of my parents. When I was 19, I chose to serve as a missionary for the Lord and was called to labor for 2 years in the country of Bolivia in South America. This was a most difficult time for me as I was quite ill for much of the time I spent there. Although I was born into a Mormon family, my experience in Bolivia required of me that I gain my own testimony instead of relying on those of my parents or other church leaders. On one particular night, I determined that I needed to ask my Father in Heaven with greater fervency and sincerity about the truthfulness of this church and of Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon than I ever had before. I spent a long time that night in personal prayer and supplication. Near dawn the next morning, I received an unmistakable answer in my heart and in my mind. Lest I be misunderstood, let me say that this was nothing more than a simple, but powerful and all encompassing feeling that touched me to the very core; one that is difficult to explain, but one that also could not be ignored. I believe that a loving Father in Heaven gave me as an individual son an opportunity to strive with real intent and to receive an answer to a simple, but sincere prayer. Although this was a singular event in my life, He continues to guide me and helps me make decisions so that I can become more like him through individualized challenges in life. I also know that he knows me by my first name (Ty) and that his love for me is unbounded. Finally, I am profoundly grateful for the fact that the Atonement of his son, Jesus Christ, enables me through a combination of my desires and efforts and his amazing grace to return to his presence.

How I live my faith

For the past 35 years, I have served in my local church congregations with the young people. This has been a wonderful blessing in my life. I have had the opportunity to be a teacher and a mentor as I have served with young people from the between the ages of 12 and 30. I have been on so many camps and conferences with both young men and young women that there are too many to count. I have had them in my home many times and my life has been influenced for good by being associated with them. Being able to hopefully be an influence for good in their lives through the gospel of Jesus Christ is a powerful motivator for me to remain true to the principles of the gospel in my own life. During some of these years, I was also called to serve as the Bishop of my local congregation. This position would be akin to the local pastor in many other Christian faiths. Recently, I have been impressed by spiritual promptings of a need to nurture greater charity and humility in my personal life. So, I have embarked on some specific new goals that will help me develop these qualities.
