Hi I'm Ruth Wong

I'm of Samoan/Maori descent. I grew up in Hastings, New Zealand. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

My parents were both converts to the church and they raised our family in the church. My upbringing involved lots of family activities with the wider family & good friends mostly from church. I was taught the value of hard work and service to others at an early age. Growing up I enjoyed playing Basketball which took me places as a young adult. I met and married my handsome Chinese/Filipino husband Jimmy Wong when I was 22. We have two beautiful children, Hemi and Leilani. Jimmy suffered with cancer and died in 1999 when our kids were 6 and 4. I've continued to raise our children in my hometown, surrounded by my immediate family and our close friends. We have an exciting life. Apart from the gospel teachings and my parents, my knowledge has come from life's experiences. Raising children into beautiful caring adults has been my greatest accomplishment. I have a greater appreciation for others in the same circumstance. Life throws challenges but I have learned to stay in close contact with Heavenly Father. It has helped me to make good choices and keep my family safe. Hemi is currently serving a Church Mission in the Philippines and Leilani is preparing to go out very soon. We are involved in many activities in the church and in our community. I work as the Communications Advisor at Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Inc. and have been there since 2001. I love working for our people. In my job I am able to share valuable information to help strengthen families.

Why I am a Mormon

My family is important to me and the church teachings and principles have helped me to be a better person, a better daughter, sister, friend, wife and mother. I am thankful for the teachings of the gospel that have helped me to gain my own simple but strong testimony. I know that God lives and that Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer. He atoned for our sins. As I have studied his life in the scriptures, I have come to know and understand his mission and purpose. I have a goal in life, to be the best me I can be and to return to our Father in Heaven with my family. To do this, I know that I need to do certain things and live my life in a way that will help me path my way back to Him. I am grateful to be a member of the church. As a member, I can learn all I need to, to prepare to meet Heavenly Father and live with my family forever. We are led by a living day prophet who receives revelation for the church. Our leaders encourage us, but we need to act. I have always strived to live the teachings of the gospel to the best of my ability and I've made many mistakes along the way, but I have picked myself up again and kept trying. We are encouraged to do this. Life experiences can be challenging and can knock you over if you let them. I have since learned and I believe challenges help us grow and to overcome our weaknesses and test our faith. I am grateful for my trials and tribulations for this very purpose. I believe that Families Can Be Together Forever. I think it's the most exciting thing and it brings me joy knowing that I will see my mum and my husband and all of our loved ones who have passed on, again. I have seen so many people suffer through trials when they don't need to. My beliefs help me to cope with life better.....problems, challenges, trials, are not going to disappear, but the teachings of the gospel can help you put these things into perspective and cope better, with faith in Jesus Christ.

How I live my faith

I was raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which means, from as far as I can remember, our family has attended church on Sundays, had Family Home Evenings on a Monday night and been heavily involved in church activities and programs ever since. Family time has always been at the top of the list. Our family (My siblings and parents included) still spend Monday evenings together. Every Monday we have Family Home Evening where we share dinner, spiritual thoughts, update each other on what we are doing and it's a time when our Dad can give us counsel when needed. It's awesome! As I have got older, I have seen the benefits of Family Home Evening. There are several programs in the church which are designed to help enhance and strengthen families. As an adult I have always been involved with the youth of the church. I have seen the benefits of valiant youth and have seen youth grow up to become wonderful adult leaders at church and in our community. In my current role as a Young Women President in our local area, my job is to provide support and advice, and assistance to local Young Women leaders to work with youth. This is exciting because we all learn from each other as we share our experiences. My daughter Leilani and I are Visiting Teaching companions and we visit with some lovely sisters on a regular basis offer love and support to them and their families. Leilani and I also visit with less active members and we remind them that they are not forgotten and that Heavenly Father loves them. This is very rewarding because we see the value of small and simple things as they develop into wonderful blessings. My personal learning also continues as I often pray and study the scriptures to learn and understand the attributes of the Savior so I can align my life, actions, values and decisions with his.
