Hi I'm Thira

I am a mother of three children, one of them has Down syndrome. I have lived in many different parts of the world, I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I believe we can find some of the greatest joys, when we don't shy away from challenges and serve with all our heart. We have three children and our daughter has Down syndrome. She keeps us on our toes for several children, but she also brings us joy for several children. Some believe children who have Down syndrome should be aborted, because life will be challenging for them and their parents. When we found out that our daughter had Down syndrome, we weren't sure how we would meet all her needs. But we did know that we loved her so much already. We were so excited and happy, but also terrified, so we cried all kinds of tears. As I poured out my heart in prayer those first few days, I remembered some teachings from my religion that had been guiding me throughout my life: When we are called to serve in whatever way, with all our heart, might, mind and strength, we will find joy! This gave me great hope at the time, and we have found it to be true every day. There are a lot of special challenges with her every day with no dull moment ever, but we are very very happy. I grew up in Austria, studied in the USA, journalism and dance with a teaching certificate, and taught in Zimbabwe, Africa. I got master's degrees in organizational behavior and international development and worked in Samoa and Fiji. Sometimes people ask whether I feel trapped at home with my children now after those experiences. I did love my work before I had children, but there is nothing I would rather do now.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up in Austria, both my parents were members of the church. I was the only Mormon at school (aside from my sibling) most of the time. We are encouraged to read scriptures every day. I found as a youth that reading the scriptures helped me feel peace and gave me inspiration during challenging times. The more I studied the scriptures and teachings of modern day prophets, the more answers and joy I found. I still feel that. It is kind of like a tree growing, and it keeps growing. One could argue, that I could talk myself into it more and more, since I study it more and more. But I believe only good seeds will keep growing. The organization of the church gives me many opportunities and reminders to serve in my family and community. As I focus my life on serving others, I feel closer to Jesus Christ.

How I live my faith

Currently I teach 6 and 7 year old children at church for an hour every Sunday. One of our main goals as teachers for these children is to teach them that God loves them and that they can pray to God who hears and answers their prayers. I hope they feel my love for them. I learn a lot from those children. I try to be a special friend for a number of women in my congregation, who are actually assigned to me, by the leaders of our women organization. One of them recently lost her husband, one of them lost a son, and one of them just moved in with her parents for a few months, to help her little family, as they struggled financially. Every time I visit with them, I am inspired by them.
