Hi I'm Matthew H. Lyman

I am a husband, father, son and an orthopedic surgeon. I am a Mormon.

About Me

My wife and I are so blessed by our membership in the lds church. My children are great. I don't know what I would do without them. My 14 year old daughter is so talented. She is a writer. She struggled at a young age to read. Now, she not only reads but writes beautifully. The other day, I was very busy and my wife said you have to read this that your daughter wrote. I thought ok, I can take a minute. Thirty minutes later I stopped...I literally couldn't put it down. The beautiful prose was mesmerizing and expressive. My son Jay is so much fun. He loves to be active and from a young age had great energy that attracted others to him. He makes friends easily. This year, in the sixth grade, he was on the student council and he loved it. My two youngest are 5 &7 and they are best friends. I served a 2 year mission that I served in Russia. I tried the best I could to meet as many of God's children. One such experience I had was when I was in Vyborg, Russia. Walking through the city one day I saw a man walk past and I felt a powerful inspiration to talk to him. I asked if he would be interested in learning more about Jesus Christ. He said that he really didn't have interest, but that his wife was really interested. We later met with his wife and after a couple of meetings, he began listening too. In four weeks, she was ready to be baptized. Four months later, he was too, and they were baptized together. I thought it was so sweet for her to wait for him.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I was born into the church. My parents taught me the gospel and this has blessed my life. Just because I am born into the church does not mean that I just keep doing it because that is what I have always done. I believe it to be true and love being a member of the church. My wife and I feel the strength of the gospel in our home on a daily basis. It brings Joy to us every day.

How I live my faith

I am a scout master and love working with the youth in my area. I try to live better each day by daily praying and studying the scriptures. When I do this, I gain inspiration that helps me in every aspect of my life. Living this gospel makes me happy and blesses my life. I am a home teacher and this gives me the opportunity to teach other members of the church monthly in their homes. In my work as an orthopedic surgeon, I am frequently faced with difficult problems in the clinic or the operating room. I often find myself making the decisions I make a matter of prayer. I can remember one such occurrence. I was taking my first weekend of call and an elbow (radial head) fracture came in that needed surgery. I prepared for the case and in the middle of the case, I found myself struggling to get the fractured bone out of the elbow. After struggling for 20 minutes to do this, I stopped and said a silent prayer. A strong impression came to me to take the elbow and flex it more. As I did this, the piece of bone simply fell into view. I knew that my Heavenly Father was aware of me and loved me. As I have continued my practice, I have often felt my fathers influence close by as I learn and refine procedures.
