Hi I'm Mike DeVries

I'm a Father to three beautiful kids, a husband to a gorgeous girl, a manager in a food company, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a Father of 3 beautiful kids; 2 boys and 1 little girl, and a husband to a gorgeous and wonderful wife. My wife and I met in college and decided early on in our marriage that we wanted a big family (5-6 kids), so we started early. Now that we have 3 we are so glad that we did. It was tough financially, early on, and we had to make sacrifices to make it work, but we really enjoyed those humble beginnings. We decided that going out to eat all the time, taking lots of vacations, buying new cars, and a big house wasn’t as important to us as being able to have kids and spend time with them. Obviously if I continue to work hard and find success in my own career, some of those things may come, but to my wife and I, what is most important is building a family. As a part of this, my wife and I both wanted to make sure she could stay home with the kids. We really felt that if we were going to have kids, why would we let someone else have the joy of raising them? There are things only a mom or a dad can teach their kids, and we wanted to make sure we gave our kids the greatest opportunity to learn and feel loved. Overall, this is my identity. This is who I am. I am a Father. And man is it fun being one.

Why I am a Mormon

I, like most members of the church, read the Book of Mormon and prayed to know if it was true. I felt the Holy Spirit in my heart confirm to me that the book was true. It was just a sweet peaceful feeling that entered my heart and made me feel happy and quiet inside. I am a member today, because I know this is God's church on the earth. I still feel the Spirit in my heart as I read and study the scriptures. The great thing about this church is that it is Christianity in action. I have many opportunities to serve those around me as do all members of this church. I get to practice what I learn, and that is so fulfilling. I still make many mistakes, but I know that as I strive to be like the Savior and repent when I do wrong, the Lord will accept me into His kingdom with my family forever.

How I live my faith

I currently help support the LDS missionaries in our area. I work with them to coordinate rides, service opportunities, and opportunities to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ. The missionaries have specific lessons for those interested in the church. I help find people interested to hear more about the church and try to help members of our ward (or local church) to do the same. As we find people who are interested to hear the missionary lessons, we sit in on the lessons as they are taught by the missionaries. This is a really fulfilling opportunity to serve. There is something wonderful about sharing what you believe with others, and I enjoy helping others to come to know what I believe to be true. I have also served as a Scout Master in our ward Scout Troop. That was a pretty challenging calling (or request to serve). It involved holding weekly activities with the young men in our troop and many overnight campouts and weekend activities. Though it took a lot of my time, it was highly rewarding to see these young men grow and develop. Having a positive influence on these young men made it all worthwhile.

Why is family so important to Mormons?

Mike DeVries
Family is what the whole plan is about. Before this life we lived with a loving Father and Mother who created our spirits. They sent us to earth to learn to become like them, so they allowed us to be placed in families. Irrespective of how you feel towards your own family it is important to understand that 1. You belong to a family already 2. Your future family is yours for the making. After this life we will have the opportunity to live with our family forever. Heaven can be felt here on this earth when our family is unified with love for one another. Show more Show less

What is being a Mormon like?

Mike DeVries
Being a “Mormon” or a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is awesome. The church helps me stay close to God and His teachings. It provides opportunities to learn how I can become a better man, Father, Husband, etc. And it gives me opportunities to apply the things I learn in service. It is true that members of the church dedicate quite a bit more time to church service than members of other religions, but I believe that is why we are generally happy as a people, because we have lots of opportunities to serve others.
