Hi I'm Alyssa

I teach high school math. I am a perpetual learner, always reading or listening to podcasts. I love plants! And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a high school math teacher on a quest to discover how my individual students learn best. Although math is my claimed degree, I also studied a variety of interests during my college years, including organ, floral design, bookbinding, and religion. I believe that college ought to be fun, and not just because of the social life! As I move forward in life, I always find new ways to learn; my current favorite methods include reading books and listening to podcasts. My husband and I share an interest in music. We met while playing in the orchestra for our high school's musical! He is an excellent jazz guitarist and rocker, and I love attending his shows and concerts. I am also a daughter (the middle of five), granddaughter, sister, aunt, and wife. More than anything in the world, I love to spend time with my family. As much as I enjoy learning new hobbies, my family is my highest priority in life, and I am so glad I have the opportunity to be with them literally forever.

Why I am a Mormon

One of my favorite doctrines of my religion is that families can be sealed together for time and all eternity in temples of God. My family life brings me greater joy than any other pursuit I may choose to follow, so the knowledge that I can have that joy beyond this life--into time spans that I can't even comprehend!--resonates deeply in me. I know that our very large human family is comprised of sons of daughters of a very loving Father who wants each of us to enjoy that happiness, and I am thankful for this knowledge.

How I live my faith

I enjoy serving in my community, especially with other women. I feel that I learn so much by listening to the wisdom of women who have walked my path before me; their examples show me how service from simple smiles to full-blown meals can affect lives for the better. I do my best to follow the principle of just-helping-however-I-can when someone around me needs a lift. This feels like Christlike living to me. I feel that my greatest ability to live my faith is within my own home. I can study scripture, speak with God, and serve with my family in ways that stretch across generations all from my couch! I love that living my faith in this way brings my Heavenly Father's influence into the most important parts of my life. I cannot imagine living my life without that influence.
