Hi I'm Matt Hyer

I grew up in Southern California. I love to surf, sing, and read. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I spent my childhood surfing with my family, waking up early in the morning to get the first waves of the day. I love to sing and play the piano. At one point, I was in a band with four of my friends called "Untold Legacy"; all of those friends have or are now serving missions. I enjoy American history. I love to read Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series and J.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings". I've been accepted to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, but have deferred my acceptance for Fall of 2016 so that I might serve my mission, which I'll be serving in the Boston, Massachusetts area.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a Mormon because it helps sustain me through the deaths of love ones. In particular, the gospel of Jesus Christ gave me strength and comfort after my brother passed away at the age of fourteen. I found comfort in the verses of the Book of Mormon, especially the scriptures that document the words of Christ when He came to the people in the Americas. I am especially grateful for the hope that the Book of Mormon gives me, as it expounds on the Christ's Atonement and Resurrection. I have accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior, and I know that He lives. I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God, and that it is contains the fullness of the Gospel. I encourage everyone to read it, and then to ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if it is true. And I promise you that if you ask with real intent, He will manifest the truth of it unto you by the power of the Holy Ghost.

How I live my faith

Since I was twelve, I have been included in many church callings, which included fellowshipping new and less-active members, planning dances and youth conferences, and setting up our chapel for church services. I have also played the piano for church meetings, sung in choirs, and led youth choirs in musical numbers.

What blessings can you receive from reading the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and other scriptures?

Matt Hyer
As I have read the scriptures, I've felt empowered by the Holy Spirit. When I feel down, anxious, or stressed about school and family losses, I've noticed that I am happier when I read the scriptures. I know that I have come closer to Christ through reading the Book of Mormon and the Bible. Also, since I have been studying the Book of Mormon more fervently, I've noticed that the words of Christ are easier to remember in times of spiritual and physical distress. Show more Show less
