Hi I'm Joshua Cook

I grew up in Las Vegas. I'm going to school in St. George Utah. I'm a Mormon

About Me

I am currently an integrated studies major with an emphasis in Biology and Psychology. Soccer is my passion and I played at a collegiate level for four years. I enjoy hiking and especially bike riding. I have a track bike, also known as a fixed gear, which is my pride and joy and I try to ride it as much as possible.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised in Vegas which is a town that promotes living in the moment and enjoying all the pleasures which life has to offer. I was not converted to the gospel of Jesus Christ until I was a senior in high school, and before this conversion I lived a completely different life. I was not following the commandments of God and I didn't really care to until I met this girl. I knew this girl all throughout high school and I would avoid her as much as possible because I knew she was a MORMON. I considered Mormons weird and judgmental but there was something different about this girl. I started to hangout with this girl and there was this glow about her that almost enticed me to know more about her. As i talked with her and we began to hangout, she almost instantly made me want to become a better person even though I never disclosed that to her. One day she invited me into her home where I met her family and this changed my whole perspective about families completely. I was so intrigued with how her family interacted with one another and how there was such a loving atmosphere. I was so use to my own family being disconnected and separated that this new display of loving affection intrigued me. As i began to hangout with the family more they introduced me to the missionaries where I began to listen to the messages which they had to offer. Previous to this experience, I had sat with the missionaries in times past and I think I was just listening to their messages out of respect. The difference this time was that I had a support group that could honestly testify of the truthfulness which the missionaries were preaching. The family testified to me that the message was true and it was evident because they were a living example of it. I still was not totally convinced that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was the true church of God until they displayed the video of the restoration. I follow this gospel because I know it to be true and it will bless my family.

How I live my faith

Being a convert to the church, I felt almost overwhelmed with the idea of receiving a calling in the church. I was scared that I would be inadequate in what ever position that they called me to be in. I am currently serving as the gospel doctrine teacher in my young single adult ward. My duty is to teach during Sunday School which is usually the second hour of our three hour block which occurs on Sunday. I was nervous at first because I would be teaching all these return missionaries and considering the fact that I haven't served yet, I felt a little inadequate. In all honesty, this has been one of the best callings that I have ever received due to the fact that I have learned so much from the experience. It is a real blessing to be able to study the material before I teach it because it helps me understand or more fully comprehend material that I am some-what unfamiliar with. For example, we are covering the old testament in Sunday School and it is truly a blessing to go over chapters which I have briefly glanced over in times past and actually have the opportunity to study them more in-depth.

Do Mormons only help Mormons?

Joshua Cook
The idea that Mormons only help Mormons is not true. One of basic principles we believe in is the idea of charity. We believe that charity is the pure love of Christ and our whole purpose is to become more Christ-like as we progress through our life on this Earth. My favorite scripture reference is, "When you are in the service of your fellow man, you are in the service of your God." Our duty as Christians is to help those who stand in need. Though our members are DEFINITELY not perfect, if we come across those who stand in need we will help regardless of their faith. Show more Show less
