Hi I'm Hanqing Zhao

I'm a Chinese American with a passion for history and literature. Foremost of all, I'm a child of God, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was born in China, and moved to the United States when I was seven years old. While growing up, I developed a passion for learning about different cultures. I attended university for three years. While there, I majored in history. I was part of the e-board for the history club, and on the editing team for the undergraduate historical journal, which I enjoyed very much. However, during my third year in college, I met LDS missionaries while on my way to class. Because of their example and through the message of the Gospel which they shared, I gained a new outlook on life. I subsequently decided to postpone my next years of school, and share my faith with others as a missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I have truly felt of God's love through the examples of those around me who embrace the teachings of Christ, and express their faith through their acts of service. When I was first learning about the church, I was very confused about a lot of its teachings. I was learning a lot of things, but I didn't really understand how they all connected, or how they were personally significant. One day, I was reading the Book of Mormon, and thinking about the examples set by Church members as they reached out to me. I thought about what the driving force behind their action could be, as it surprised me that they would care about me, given that I didn't care much about myself at the time. Then it all clicked. That motivating power was the love of Christ, and I recognized it as a power not of this world. Knowing this, all of the doctrines suddenly made sense, and I gained a new perspective on life, one which lead to lasting happiness. I know that the Atonement of Jesus Christ is real. I have witnessed it working in the lives of people, and felt it empowering me to accomplish feats I alone cannot accomplish. It has made me a new person, and given me a working world view. I have the responsibility and the privilege of sharing this witness with others.

How I live my faith

I'm a firm believer that every member is a missionary, which means that every follower of Christ has an inherent responsibility to share His message with others. Shortly after being baptized, I was a asked to serve as a ward-missionary, that is, to help the full-time missionaries in doing their work of sharing the message of the gospel. Throughout this experience, I was able to observe firsthand the power of the gospel in transforming the lives of people who accepted it. I also developed greater faith in my Savior, and gained a greater appreciation of the love that He has for all of His children. I began to realize the importance of doing His work. It is something that I am realizing more and more as a full-time missionary.
