Hi I'm Ashley Van Tonder

I love life and my family. I'm a Mormon!

About Me

I'm a missionary in the Taiwan Taipei Mission and I'm proud of it! I'm a Latina which means I love to dance, laugh, and party all night long! I love my big family, kids, travelling, working out, hiking, and new places. My dad is from South Africa and my mom was from Venezuela. I was born in France and my parents decided to move to Canada when I was a year and a half old. When I was 12 we then moved to Costa Rica for 3 months and then to Panama for the next 3 years. It's been a blessing to be able to live in so many different countries and to see the way the Lord blesses each one of us no matter where we are.

Why I am a Mormon

I think the better question would be, "Why are you still a Mormon?". I have so many reasons and trials come in my life as to why I should not be a "Mormon" or to believe that God does not love me. I noticed as I started to believe this I couldn't find that real happiness. I believed and relied on others for my happiness. I believed that I needed something good or amazing to happen for me to be happy. To be honest, those things did happen and they did make me happy. The only problem is,it didn't truly last. I found myself hanging on by a thread needing another miracle to make me happy or another sign from God to show that He truly loved me. When those things happened, those miracles appeared, or God found one more way to prove His love for me, I would believe, but that belief would fade away because I would pa more attention to the doubts and justifications inside my mind. My faith was not built upon my Savior Jesus Christ. Faith in Jesus Christ means fully trusting in Him and believing that you can be happy no matter what goes on in your life. It means believing that whatever happens in your life happens for a reason. That reason is for you to come Closer to God. At that time I didn't know that my faith wasn't built upon Christ alone. As I noticed that, I started to believe that I did not have faith in Christ. I was lead to believe that I did not know Him. But because our God is so merciful, He provided a way for me to be humbled enough to be able to see the truth. That I needed to accept where I was, and that I did in fact know Jesus Christ and that we all did before coming to this earth. Now, my purpose is to rediscover these things as I find myself in Him. This is why I am a Mormon. I love it :)

How I live my faith

I think it's hard to explain how I live my faith but I do it little by little ever day. One decision I made to show my gratitude towards God for all He's provided for me is to serve a mission. I love going out everyday and sharing the restored truths through the Book of Mormon. I love being able to see how the Lord blesses His children everyday. Although I am called to serve the people of Taiwan, I feel like they've served me more than what I've ever been able to do for them. What I know to be true allows me to be happy and see the light during times of difficulty. If there was no God, I would have no purpose. But, because there is a God and I know that He loves every single one of us, He allows us to struggle so that we can put all our trust in Him. I trust in Him because I want to become one with Him. This is how I live my faith.
