Hi I'm Sam

I'm 23, I'm a college student and athlete, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was born and raised in sunny Southern California, the youngest of four children, but I now live in (freezing cold) Provo, Utah and attend BYU. I have always had a love for sports. In fact, I think I dribbled a basketball before I even learned how to walk! Here at BYU, I high jump for the track team. So far this year, I've cleared 7 feet... but I still have plans to jump a lot higher. Even though I'm super skinny, eating is one of my passions. Mexican food is my main stomping grounds. Don't get it twisted though... I'm a horrible cook! When I was 9 years old, I called 911 when I saw that my fudge Pop Tart had caught the kitchen on fire! Let's just say my parents weren't very happy. When I turned 19, I left California and lived two years in South America to be a missionary for my church. I learned three different languages (Spanish, Portuguese, & Guarani) and learned how to live on my own. (But with lots of Pop Tarts, Hot Pockets, and Top Ramin, of course) I love traveling and learning new things. Meeting new people is one of my favorite things to do. I love to make people laugh. If you want to be on my good side, laugh at my dumb jokes. I think this life is so short that we should always strive to be happy. Happiness is not determined by other people, rather it is determined by ourselves! I have found happiness in my life through my family, friends, and most importantly my belief in Christ!

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a Mormon because it is the only place that I find myself to be completely satisfied. There are SO many religions in the world; and although they all have great things, the Mormon church is the only one that can answer all of my questions. I'm a Mormon because I now understand why I am here and where I am going. I'm a Mormon because I receive guidance from a living prophet of God. I'm a Mormon because I know that if I am faithful, I will overcome death and live with God and my family forever. But most importantly, I'm a Mormon because God has indicated to me that this is His way to find happiness in this life and eternal life in the one to come.

How I live my faith

Being a Mormon is not the easiest thing in the world.... but IT IS the most gratifying. Growing up in LA, I was the only Mormon at my high school. My peers always wondered why I didn't smoke, drink, or "have fun" with them. To be honest, I never really thought of those things as "fun". Fun to me is going to the beach or hiking a mountain, not consuming alcohol. Ultimately, I think that is the best way to show your faith in Christ. People always notice the kid that is different. Even Christ himself was persecuted for being different. Let's face it: Mormons are different people. We do not live the standards that the world sets, rather we commit to a higher standard. This disciplined lifestyle is difficult, but it is worth it. If we are faithful, we are promised more happiness than money can buy. During my time in South America, it was amazing to see how happy faithful members of the church were, despite not having much worldly possessions. The knowledge of the Gospel is much more valuable than anything the world can offer. Because I am committed to the gospel, I AM different.... but likewise, I am blessed. Every good thing that has ever happened to me can be rooted in my faith in Christ. So while some may find temporary happiness in the things that the world as to offer, no one can truly find an eternal sense of hope and peace without fully embracing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
