Hi I'm Joseph Shields

I was born in Hawaii, and my dad is in the Army. I have lived all over the United States and I am a Mormon.

About Me

I love to hike and backpack. I enjoy having fun with friends, dancing, and playing sports. I love sledding and snowboarding. I am currently attending Utah State University. I am a freshmen studying business administration.

Why I am a Mormon

When I moved to Washington, I was 16 and did not know for myself that the church I had been going to was true. Many talks and teachings came up on the topic of testimony. I knew I did not have one. I knew what I was looking for, and I sort of knew how to get there, I was just missing the courage and the right start on my path. This is when I was sent to a missionary camp called: Camp Heleman. One activity: the “Enos Experience”, where yo are given an hour alone in the woods. This time of the camp is a highlight for most. We all go into the woods and find a place alone to sit and ponder, pray, and read the scriptures. I was building up for this moment. I was ready to pray and had faith that I would get an answer. I sat on a log and read from Mormon’s words: “if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost”. After I prayed, addressing God, I sincerely asked if the Book of Mormon was true. For a moment I paused and there was a second of emptiness, then I was overwhelmed with a feeling that I had never before felt. This profound feeling I knew was not from myself; it was from an external force. I knew this was the Holy Ghost. With tears streaming down my face I asked if God is my heavenly father, if Jesus is the Christ, and if his atonement is real. I continued to have the same feeling of peace and warmth inside. I asked if Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and if he truly translated the scriptures to what we have today. I got the same answer and I asked if our president of the church is a true living prophet, again gaining the same feeling from the spirit. On that log in the woods that day; quiet, warm, blue skies, with a dull buzz of insects in the back ground, I gained my religious conviction. I walked away from that experience so happy that my prayer had been answered. I now truly have a testimony of these things that I asked in sincere prayer.

How I live my faith

I am currently the Sunday School President in my young single adult ward. I home teach with a companion to others in the dorms, bringing them gospel lessons and the spirit. I teach lessons in gospel doctrine and gospel principles in church. With my calling I help the ward become better taught by helping teachers learn to instruct with the spirit. I organize the teaching assignments so the members can become closer to Christ.
