Hi I'm Kurt Bockoven

Grew up in the small town of Fort Dodge, Iowa. Spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy. I am a faithful Mormon.

About Me

I grew up as a shy insecure boy in the small town of Fort Dodge, Iowa. I thought that joining the U.S. Navy would change my life. Boy did it! Responsibility and doing hard things brought me out of my shell and gave me confidence. But the sordid stereotypical Navy life also brought many bad influences. I wasn't happy. Then I found the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (The Mormons). It literally changed my course in life. It gave me sound things to believe in. Helped me to put away addictions, an unhealthy lifestyle, and live for more than just me. I completed 20 years in the Navy. Went on to college after that and pursued another career. I have been active in this church ever since I joined. I love that no matter where I go the doctrine remained the same. The community accepts me and I have instant friends who help us to get settled and flourish.

Why I am a Mormon

I've indulged in many worldly things thinking I would be happy. Yet I was miserable. I needed to know there was definite right and wrong. That my life had more meaning than pursuing physical pleasure. That pursuit left me with many regrets, remorse, and lost opportunities. When I happened upon the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) I found that rock that I needed to base my life on. Sure it was hard to change but oh so worth it. Isn't that always the way tit is though? Nothing worth having is easy. I know God lives and loves me just as much as people of old. He has given me a Prophet just like in the Old Testament. I have read the Book of Mormon ( a record of Jews in America) and I have asked God if it is true and He confirmed it to me. Because of that spiritual experience I know Joseph Smith was a Prophet and that Thomas S. Monson is God's Prophet today. The gospel brings me so much happiness. I have made covenants with God in his temple and get to be married to my wife even in heaven and continue my relationship with my kids and grand kids. All because I was willing to listen to two young missionaries and not take their word for it but I went to the source and asked God if their message was true. Give it a try. You won't regret it.

How I live my faith

I truly believe God lives and has called a prophet to lead His church. The prophet has called others to direct God's work. So when I receive an assignment from a church leader I believe it is from God. Right now I am a Sunday School teacher. I love it! I learn more than I could ever teach to my class. Now granted some assignments in the past have been hard. I was out of my comfort zone, floundering. But because I believe it was what God wanted me to do I persisted. Boy did I learn a lot of skills I would have never have developed otherwise.
