Hi I'm Laura "LoLo" Burns

I'm from Utah, and I'm a Mormon, Shocker! But I may not be what you expect.

About Me

Cancer runs rampant in my family, my grandfather had 28 different cancer surgeries before he died, and my mom has had 4 different kind of cancers, for this reason I am studying Community Health Education. I wasn't active till I was 19 years old. When I was 23 I decided to go on a Mission. I visualized being in front of my Heavenly Father when I died and him asking me, with no judgement, why I didn't go on a mission. I had perfect and valid excuses, one of them being leaving my mom all alone while she went through cancer. I pictured Heavenly Father looking at me with love in his eyes and saying " you know I would have taken care of her", my reply would have been, " of course you would have". I didn't want to have that regret, so I put my faith in Heavenly Father and went to Palmyra, New York to serve a mission, my mother was taken care of and I never worried about her because I knew I would be blessed.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up with a lot of Jewish friends. I learned a lot about Judaism and I really liked it, but there was one thing that I couldn't get passed that just did feel right in my heart, and that was the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Even though I didn't know much about the Mormon religion, I knew that some of its principles just felt right. I continued to research different religions and pray to God to help me see if I really want to be Mormon. I didn't have any crazy miraculous experience, I wasn't visited by an angel. But the spirit of the Holy Ghost was consistent in comforting me and making me feel good when I would read the Book of Mormon and when I would learn about the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. It took years until I was convinced that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was the true church on this earth. I knew that there were truths in most other religions, and Judaism actually has a lot of similarities to the LDS church and that's why it spoke to my heart. But the Mormon church felt the most complete to me of all the other denominations. I love the Gospel, and I love that I can pray to my Heavenly Father about everything. One of the things someone said to me once, was that " when you don't feel worthy to pray, that's when you need to pray the most". Keep the Lord involved in all you do, even when you feel guilty about something. You are his child, he loves you, he knows you, and want to be there for you through ALL of the challenges that your life will bring.

How I live my faith

My faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ is based on my communication with my Heavenly Father. I pray to him constantly and talk to him when I need advice. I try and go to church as often as I can, and surround myself with good people. Talking about your problems with others can help you both become closer to God. I try to teach others through my actions and service. Charity is the epitome of Christ. Through service I am able to feel Gods love and be hopeful for the future, even when life's hard.
