Hi I'm Derek

I grew up in Arizona. I'm a computer geek who enjoys fine art and listening to music in my spare time. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a pretty average guy. I spent 2 years at a community college studying for a carreer in computer network administration after highschool and worked in IT for a local company. I spent a lot of my spare time in my my younger years doing various art projects. Art and creativity has been a major passion of mine. I have dabbled in painting, drawing, sculpting, and mixed media art forms. I also enjoy music a lot and spent much of my time in highschool participating in choir. I enjoy many types of music including (but not limited to) classical, contemporary, neo-classical rock, progressive rock, jazz, alternative rock, musicals, and rhythmic soul. I enjoy watching sports from time to time although I haven't followed sports as closely in recent years. The biggest thing about me though, is that I love learning and understanding new things. There are so many fascinating things about the world our Heavenly Father has created for us to live in.

Why I am a Mormon

originally I was a mormon simply because that was the faith I was raised in. As I grew older it became easier to stop participating in church things as much because I didn't know for myself that the church was true, but I never doubted that there was a god who loved me. I struggled with severe anxiety and depression and things seemed to continually go wrong for me at this point in my life. I came to a point where I didn't know what to do. I knew there was something important missing in my life and I was not happy in my current state. My mother had always taught me to pray so as a last resort, I fell to my knees and prayed to my Heavenly Father. I told him that I felt lost and that I didn't know what to do anymore because things were so tough and I couldn't do it alone anymore. I expressed my feelings of heartache and sorrow and said "Heavenly Father I will do anything, just help me figure out what I need to do to be happy again". I was overcome with a feeling of peace and it reasured me that things were going to work out. later on that week, a cousin of me invited me to go to church with her. There I made some new friends and more importantly, I felt really positive. It was nice to feel so loved and accepted when I had felt so hopeless. at that moment, I knw that this was the answer to my prayer. Going back to church and living everything seemed very tough at the time. However, it got easier and I learned to love it and the happiness it brings me. That is why I am a mormon.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by actively attending church meetings and participating in church assignments. For a time I served as a family history consultant and taught the youth how to do family history work and access geneology records. Once a month I visit fellow church members at their homes to share a short, uplifting, spiritual message and offer service based upon the family's needs. I often attend service projects on saturdays for various people in the community. In addition I have committed to serving a full-time mission, devoting 2 years of my time and service so that others may share and enjoy the same happiness I have found as a member of this church.
