Hi I'm Dena

I was born and raised in Canada, then transplanted myself to the US. I'm an artist, book nerd, and a Mormon.

About Me

I came to the United States for college, where I met my husband. We've been married for 10 years now, and we have two children. After moving all over the country (12 moves in the first 9 years of marriage!) we have finally (hopefully) settled down. We left the big city for a small town where our kids could go to school without worrying about gangs and we could look outside and see trees instead of apartment buildings. I moonlight as an artist. I paint mostly with oils, and a bit with watercolors. Landscapes and religious art are my subjects of choice. I also create digital clip art that I sell online. Recently, I have been learning how to do hand lettering so that I can expand my portfolio into new areas. I am a big time book nerd. I love to read. I read anything and everything, from classics to children's books to non-fiction to suspense thrillers. I've been blogging about books for a year and a half. Mostly kid's books and young adult books, but sometimes a book for adults sneaks in too. :) I have also written several books for children, but I've never tried to publish them.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into this church, but the choice to stay in it was mine. Like most people, I've had struggles with my faith and I've had questions about different areas of the gospel. Each time I have a question, I search the scriptures and pray about it. If it's something really pressing, I will also do a fast. I know that God answers prayers. He has answered mine time and again. Whenever I start to wonder, "Is this worth it? Is this even true?" I turn to prayer. I've felt God's assurance that this is His gospel. This is His church. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has laid out a simple way of living that brings me happiness. I find joy and honor in being a mother and wife. I am so glad that I get to raise my children in this church because I know it will bring them happiness as well - both in this life, and in the life to come. I've seen the difference the Church has made in people's lives. My father did not grow up in the Mormon Church. He found it as a teenager. But he recognized something different about the people in the church, and he wanted to have it for himself. I'm grateful that he made the decision to join the church and raise his family in a gospel that teaches about fidelity, love, and eternal families.

How I live my faith

I volunteer at my church as a Sunday School teacher for the five year old kids. I love teaching those kids! They are so bright and full of curiosity. Recently, I've also started volunteering as a leader for the 10-11 year old girls activity group at church. We get to meet up twice a month and teach the girls new skills. It's a wonderful opportunity for me to feel like I'm giving back. One of my New Year's resolutions was to do more service for others. So I bought a sewing machine and some fabric and I've started sewing burp cloths to donate to a local shelter. Someone made me a bunch of flannel burp cloths when I had my first baby, and they were the best! I wanted to do that for someone else.
