Hi I'm James Kelly Dugan

I'm a tennis player. I'm a convert. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

My name is James and I am going to school at Brigham Young University, preparing to leave on a mission this summer. I am from Renton, Washington, a suburb outside of Seattle where I lived with my older sister and parents. I am studying Physiology and Developmental Biology, and I hope to be a pediatrician one day. I love to play sports and be outdoors in my free time. Being from the Northwest of the United States, I love to hike and get out in the open air. Along with hiking, I have played tennis for most of my life and take every chance I get to play. I also enjoy playing volleyball, baseball, and ultimate frisbee. I have had the wonderful opportunity to visit many countries in Europe and South America. I hope to travel to at least a country in every continent in my lifetime. I was a convert to the church, senior year of High school, and have loved every moment of it. I couldn't imagine my future without my faith now.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up without religion in my life and never really had a sense of God. During my junior year of high school, my life took a major detour and I started to look for ways to turn it around. That is when my friend asked me to go to church with her. She was LDS and I felt awkward at first. I kept coming because I made some amazing friends in the church who have become like family to me. I hate to say that I came to church for the amazing fellowship that I felt, but I stayed for my love of Christ that took time to grow. I investigated for a year and a half before getting baptized, and in that year I changed a lot about myself. I had never believed in God but now I knew that I had a Heavenly Father, I came to know that the Book of Mormon was true, and that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. I know that Jesus Christ loves me and walks alongside me to lift me up when I need him. My LDS friends are some of the greatest people I will ever know and I am eternally grateful for the testimony that they helped me build. I continue to be the only LDS member of my family and I still love my sister and parents deeply. I know that we all have our own agency and can make our own decisions in life. This church is truly amazing though, and I feel so at home whenever I attend church. I know we were sent to this earth to choose Heavenly Father again and prepare to be more like him so that we can return home to live in his presence.

How I live my faith

I love to interact with others. My calling in church right now is the executive secretary for my ward. I get to set up all of the appointments with our bishop for the members to talk to him. This gives me the unique opportunity to talk and meet all 150 students in my ward. This is such a great way to know faces and make friends while also learning from my bishop. I also take hometeaching seriously and make sure that those I teach feel loved. I try to visit them multiple times a month and make a strong friendship with them so they know that I can help them with anything. I also try to help all those that I can, whether that be with homework to a short talk, I try to find anyway to be helpful. I let my faith help me in my decision making and rely on Heavenly Father to guide me through my life.
