Hi I'm Mark Petersen

I grew up in Billings, Montana and currently live in Utah. I am married and have 4 children. I am a Mormon.

About Me

I was born in Utah but grew up in Montana. I love the outdoors and playing sports. During my teenage years I played tennis, baseball, and basketball. I continue to enjoy playing tennis and participating in outdoor activities. I studied Mechanical Engineering in college and have worked in the oil industry for over 25 years. I met my best friend and wife in Montana and we have 4 terrific children, two boys and two girls. Our youngest son is serving as a missionary in the Washington DC area. We miss him, but we are excited that he chose to serve and look forward each week to reading his emails about the experiences he is having. Our first grandson was born in May 2014 and we are expecting a granddaughter in November 2014. Although our children are scattered geographically, we enjoy gathering as a family and participating in activities such as hiking, biking, jeeping, and fishing. We also enjoy attending high school and college sporting events. My wife grew up with an appreciation for the arts and some of that has worn off on me. We enjoy attending plays and other cultural events together. I have 3 bothers and a sister. My oldest brother had Downs syndrome. He passed away a few years ago. I learned much about love and compassion as I watched my parents dedicate their lives to his care while still providing the rest of us with the attention we needed. My brother taught me about unconditional love for others, the kind of love that Christ demonstrates for us.

Why I am a Mormon

I was taught the gospel when I was young by my parents. I also have studied the gospel on my own. I have prayerfully read the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and the revelations of modern prophets. I have tried to live the teachings contained in those scriptures. I have fasted and prayed to know whether the true Gospel of Jesus Christ was restored through the prophet Joseph Smith. On many occasions I have received a warm, peaceful feeling as I have pondered the teachings found in the Book of Mormon as well as the revelations given to modern prophets. I believe that those feelings are the Holy Ghost testifying to me that the Gospel was restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith. I have felt the influence of the Holy Ghost when I have participated in gospel ordinances such as Baptisms and Confirmations. Because of those experiences, I know that the authority to perform those ordinances has been restored to the earth. I am still studying and learning about the gospel and sometimes I have questions, but I have faith that our Heavenly Father hears and answers prayers and that He is aware of my needs and my family's needs and that He will provide a way for those needs to be met. The Gospel of Jesus Christ and the eternal perspective it brings has brought me much peace in my life. When I lost my mother and brother the Gospel helped me understand that our separation would only be temporary, that because of Christ's sacrifice we would have the opportunity to be resurrected and because of ordinances performed in a temple we will have the opportunity to be reunited. I am grateful for my personal testimony of the Gospel and for the happiness and peace it brings me.

How I live my faith

I try to live my faith by being obedient to Heavenly Father's will and by serving others. I have had the opportunity to work closely with the youth in our area for many years. I have learned from their example as I have had the opportunity to teach them and participate in activities with them. I have served as a leader in our congregation and have learned to be more understanding and compassionate as I have helped others overcome their challenges. I try to follow the example that Christ set by trying to be aware of the needs of others and help those needs to be met. I have found that the more I live my faith the more my faith in the Lord grows. Overall, I think it is important to try to be honest in my dealings with others and just to try to be a good person.
