Hi I'm Shirley

I grew up in California and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints while in college, 42 years ago.

About Me

I have been married 41 years, have a wonderful husband, 8 children, and 21 grandchildren. I was fortunate to be a stay at home Mom while my children were at home. I also taught elementary school part time when my children were older. I love to be outdoors and enjoy doing many things there including hiking, cross country skiing, and running. I ran in my first 5K race when I was 57 years old. I coached a jump rope team for a few years, which several of my children were a part of. I also love to sew, and have enjoyed making my children and grandchildren baby quilts, blessing outfits and Christmas pajamas. I love music, and especially enjoy listening to many kinds of music. I took some piano and guitar lessons when I was younger, and one of my goals is to practice these and become more proficient at playing both the piano and guitar.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up in a home where Christian values and practices were taught. I learned to pray to my Heavenly Father, and to study the Bible. When I came in contact with a friend in college who was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, I started asking questions about his religion. One of the most important questions I asked was when he said he wanted to marry someone in the temple and I asked - What is a temple? I learned that not only were there temples in the time before and when Jesus was on earth, but the Lord has provided temples in our day so we can have the same blessings. These blessings include knowledge of His plan of salvation, and provide ordinances that will bind families together for eternity. To me, the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ make perfect sense. We have a Heavenly Father who loves us now just as He has loved all of His children in all times and places. The Church that Jesus Christ established when he lived has been restored in our day so that our Heavenly Father can pour out His love to us, and we can do His work. This Church includes ordinances necessary for exaltation, Priesthood authority, and Prophets, apostles and other officers as the Lord established over 2000 years ago. I have been so abundantly blessed by being a member of His restored Church. Those who strive to do the Lord's will, and covenant to keep His commandments are promised to be given all that the Father has, including being able to live with Him and His Son, with our families, forever. I am thankful that I have the opportunity to continually learn and grow in His gospel and hope I can serve those around me by being a good example and lifting others up.

How I live my faith

I have been directing the choir in my Church congregation for the last few years, and have enjoyed singing in the choir for many years. I have also taught the young people in our congregation both in lessons and music. It was delightful. When I taught school, I organized field trips that related to lifetime sports for each of the elementary classes in our school, such as bowling, hiking, swimming, cross country skiing, roller skating and ice skating. I have helped organize activities and camp activities for the young women in our congregation. I have taught classes in all age groups from the children, youth and adults. I have organized jumprope for heart fundraising events in our community. I try to live the principles of integrity and faith I believe in , donate my time to good purposes, and be a good example to those around me.
