Hi I'm Whitney

I play Division 1 basketball for the University of New Mexico. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am the oldest child of four. So naturally, I consider my siblings extremely spoiled, but I love them dearly anyway. Being the oldest means I am very responsible and I have to be on time. I detest being late for things, it's a pet peeve of mine. So the few years that my sister and I were in high school together annoyed me because she's the type to walk in to class right as the bell is ringing. But like I said, I love her anyway, especially since I consider her one of my best friends. We do everything together. Recently, we've been avid workout buddies since both of us have the opportunity to play D1 basketball. I play with the UNM Lobos and she with the University of Northern Colorado Bears. We are extremely competitive with each other, but I would say that trait runs in the family--both my parents played D1 collegiate basketball, and my younger siblings enjoy the sport as well. Although people know me as a basketball player, I will always have a special passion for volleyball--my high school vball teammates and I took state our senior year. Other than sports, I'm a bit of a nerd because I absolutely love to read. My siblings make fun of me because of it, so every once in a while they're able to pull me away from a book long enough to make a hilarious music video with them. Facebook is full of our beautiful creations. My favorite color is blue, I have a car named Ester, I hate cooking, and I think men with brown hair and blue eyes are gorgeous.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I have come to understand the importance of obedience to God's laws. Faith is the first step when coming unto Christ, but faith must be shown and strengthened through our actions. Being part of this church allows me to manifest my love to Christ by following His commandments, and serving His children. I am a Mormon because I know that God loves me, and I love Him, and this church teaches me how I can draw closer to Him and take advantage of the Grace and Atonement that He has given me to return to Him. I am a Mormon because this is His Gospel, and I love it with all my heart, and I understand that I need it in my life in order to become all that God needs me to be.

How I live my faith

For the past two years I have been an active participant in my little young single adult branch in Albuquerque. I've been the president of our women's organization, the Relief Society, so I have been in charge of coordinating activities, visiting the sisters in my area, and counseling with them in times of need. I have loved the opportunities for service I've had, and I love the sisters in my area. Serving them has taught me a lot about how I can better serve my teammates. I'm one that likes to lead by example, so my hope has been that as I walk in the footsteps of Christ, those around me will desire to do the same. Because my teammates and friends know me as the "religious Mormon girl", I know they keep an eye on me to make sure I'm living the standards that I say I live. My teammates also nominated me to say the pre-game prayers, which terrified me at first because I hate being in the spotlight. But I've gotten used to it, and I hope they can feel my sincerity as I speak to Heavenly Father on behalf of our team. Another way I plan to live my faith in the future is by serving a mission. I have been called to the Mexico Mexico City Northwest Mission, and I couldn't be more excited to serve the Lord. Although I am sacrificing basketball and my education for a bit, I know the Lord will bless me for this decision and He will allow me to grow and serve in ways that wouldn't have been possible for me in Albuquerque.
