Hi I'm Jack

I enjoy hiking, boardgames, and singing. I think about data, inequality, and human progress. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a big nerd! I love playing boardgames and strategy games with friends. My favourite game right now is a 2-hour-long game about farming call Agricola. I met all of my best friends from university from playing Magic the Gathering tournaments. I also enjoy long walks and hikes in the woods. When the weather's nice I love driving a few hours out of town and hiking in a new area and just getting completely lost on the trails. I love music. I love seeing smaller less well-known bands live. My favourite genre is indie rock but I listen to everything from rap to jazz, from country to techno. I'm not too great on the piano but I can sing decently.

Why I am a Mormon

I joined the church in spring of 2011. I was going to university at the time and I just felt like the way I was living wasn't working for me. I had a very pessimistic and deterministic perspective on life. I felt like I was doing many things in my life more out of habit and compulsion than with real intent. Just when I was wondering whether there was something more in life, a pair of missionaries knocked on my door. I knew who they were from a few brief discussions on the street and welcomed them in. I asked them about their beliefs and was curious but unconvinced. When we read from the Book of Mormon together, I found myself imagining how my life would be if I had the faith these two young missionaries had. When they asked me to kneel down and pray for the first time in my life, I didn't know what to say. I asked God to give me a sign and let me know if He did exist and after my prayer, I felt a profound sense of peace. I had never felt this sense of peace in my life before. After meeting with the missionaries for five weeks, I decided to be baptized in the church and I have never looked back. Now I'm inviting people to experience what I had felt full-time.

How I live my faith

Right now I'm serving as a full-time missionary in the Utah Salt Lake City East mission. Before going to Utah, I served in my ward as the financial clerk. I helped the local leadership in calculating and recording weekly donations and in printing cheques for expenses.
