Hi I'm Alex Cantrell

Living the Dream Since '94. Suit up!

About Me

I love watching and playing sports, particularly basketball. My favorite teams are the University of North Carolina Tar Heels and the Portland Trailblazers. I enjoy going out and serving others and trying to stay positive and happy. I am the oldest of two boys; my little brother is serving a mission in Ventura California. I am currently serving in the Oregon Portland Mission and I love being a missionary! Before my mission I worked at Foot Locker and went to school at BYU-Idaho. I also love playing Pokemon. Nothing tickles my fancy more than trying to catch 'em all.

Why I am a Mormon

Being a missionary means that you have to ask people to change their lives in order to be baptized and to come unto Christ. It is often a big and scary step. At the beginning of missions, new missionaries go to the MTC, or Missionary Trainer Center, how to teach investigators. After 12 days of serving a mission in the MTC, I went home early. I wasn't as prepared as spiritually and emotionally like I had thought that I previously had. I dedicated my life to return back out to the mission field. It was a hard and struggling time. I had friends who had abandoned me and I needed to make some big changes in my life in order to be the man and missionary that I wanted to be. After 8 months of hard work of prayer, scripture study, and attendance of church, I was able to return to the Oregon Portland Mission to teach what I know is true word of God. I would not be able to return on a mission if it wasn't for the relationship that I developed with Jesus Christ. I know that the gospel is true. I would not work hard for 2 years and 8 months if I did not know that it was.

How I live my faith

Being a Mormon has taught me a lot of great life lessons and skills. Because I am human, I make mistakes and I accidentally do things that I regret or that I wish that I did better. There are so many things that I need to do better such as being more patient, being more forgiving, humble, obedient; the list goes on. It teaches me that even though I may fall short and mess up, that tomorrow I can become better and I can learn from my past and can use it to become a better person in the future. I have done a lot of things in my life that I wish that I could redo or do better. But the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has taught me that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ and that I follow His example, then I can become a better person. I still fall short and I still make mistakes but each day by following the example of Jesus Christ, I can learn to be Christlike. Currently I am a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints serving in the Oregon Portland Mission for two years. It is during this time that missionaries give up everything to go out to their assigned mission for two years. I have contact with my family through email once a week.

Why do Mormon missionaries proselyte?

Alex Cantrell
We proselyte because we know of the truth and happiness that it brings into our lives and we want others to feel that joy. We have been commanded of God to serve with all of our heart, might, mind and strength that we may stand blameless before God at the last day. It is just a small way for us to serve the Lord and to give thanks for the blessings that we have received in our lives. Show more Show less

What is the Mormon lifestyle like? How do Mormons live?

Alex Cantrell
Being a Mormon is way fun. People think that it is restrictive because you "can't do this or can't do that." But actually it is a choice to live how we live. We follow these choices because they make us safe and happier. They aren't restrictions, they are guidelines to make us safer. They are there for a reason. It is like a stop sign on a busy intersection. You can choose to stop or you can speed through. People put the sign there to help you stay safe. The same can be said for how Mormon's live. I go to church every Sunday, read my scriptures, don't drink alcohol because I choose not too and it makes me happier and I don't have to deal with the negative consequences. Show more Show less
