Hi I'm Josh Doying

I love my wife. I love my students. I love my savior, and I'm a mormon

About Me

I got married in February 2013, graduated and moved out to North Carolina. My wife and I have never been here before but are loving every minute of our adventure. She's studying quantitative policy, and I'm teaching high schoolers math. Some days her studies drive her crazy, and some days my students do the same, but we know why we're here, and we are finding joy in the journey. When I'm not pulling out my hair trying to figure out how to make coordinate geometry seem cool (Pixar uses it to create computer animation!) I love biking, running, swimming and competing in triathlons. I'm an armchair economist and a wantrepreneur working on an app to improve runners race day experience. I'm (slowly) restoring a vintage bike, and trying to prove to my wife that I can make things out of wood. Whenever we get a chance, my wife and I try and take cheap trips to beautiful places. We've found that you don't need a lot of money to catch ghost crabs on the beach, get lost in a national park or catch up with friends on a roller coaster.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a Mormon because I believe in God. I believe he loves us and has a plan and purpose for each of us. I believe he wants us to be happy and I've found that I am happiest when I follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. When I "lift up the hands that hang down," and have a "perfect brightness of hope," my life has more meaning. I've found that when "I'm in the service of my fellow man, I am only in the service of my God." I've found these teachings in their fullness in the Book of Mormon. And when I reached a period in my life where I had to know if this belief was just blind optimism or based on something true, I got on my knees and prayed to know for myself. I know God Lives. I know he loves me. And I know that he provided his Son, Jesus Christ, to show us the way that we could forgive, and be forgiven, to help strengthen our weaknesses and to provide a path and a hope in the midst of our troubles. I know that his church is on the earth today, and that anyone can gain this knowledge for themselves.

How I live my faith

As a teacher I feel responsible not only for my students grades but also for their character. I encourage positive and clean language, responsibility, hard work, and curiosity. At church I am the assistant scout master, so in between 12 year old jokes that I don't really understand an lots of description of Disney and TV shows, I try and encourage the same values. I'm working to build a family like the one I grew up in, a family centered on Christ. It won't be without stressful times but I want a family that understands where we came from and where we are going.
