Hi I'm Kent Sievers

I am a computer programer. I wrote my first program on a PDP10 in 1975 while in high school. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am the youngest of 4 boys. My parents divorced when I was 4. My dad had mental issues and could provide little support. My mother developed Rheumatoid Arthritis which significantly disabled her. I grew up on welfare. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints saved me in every way a person can be saved. I saw great examples of how to live. Help was always provided whenever we needed it. I was taught Gospel principles. I got good grades and got a scholarship to college. I postponed my education to serve a mission for the church. While on that mission my mother died. When I got home I stayed with my brother for the summer and earned money for school. I married a girl that I had known from High School. We got married just after she graduated from college. I finished second in my class with a BS in computer science. I have made a very good living as a computer programmer. My wonderful wife and I have raised 5 boys, 4 of them Eagle Scouts. 3 have served missions and our youngest is serving one now. We have made it a habit to "take in strays". We have had living with us at one time or another, a Swede, two Germans, a Brazilian, a young man from Saipan, his sister, a couple of my cousins and a young man from New York. We love to boat, camp and play almost any sport. I coached youth soccer for 14 years. My wife is my soul mate. We have two granddaughters. My wife loves to garden.

Why I am a Mormon

I know that there is a God. The wonders of the world around me and the experiences of my life provide vast evidence. I know that my relationship with God is exactly that of Father to Son. I know that Jesus Christ is my older brother, the only begotten of the Father, my Lord and my Savior. I know that he came to Earth to show me an example and to save me from death and hell. I know that he suffered for my sins. I know that he understands. I know that he is my advocate. I know that I existed before I was born and that this life is a time for me to learn and grow and become a better man. I know that the plan is for me to return to my Heavenly Father. My wife is my eternal companion. I know that everything that has happened in my life, from the very best to the very worst, has been for my benefit. To teach me. To strengthen me. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day-saints ... not just because it has saved me ... not just because it does a lot of good ... not just because it has correct teachings ... but because it is true. It is Christ's church. It has been restored. It is lead by a living Prophet of God.

How I live my faith

I try to be honest. I try to be a valuable employee. I try to be a contributor to society. I give of my time and money very freely. I have been a scoutmaster 3 different times for a total of about 12 years. I coached youth city league soccer for 15 years. I served on the cites soccer board. I have sat on many Eagle scout board of reviews. I am a member of CERT (community emergency response team). I have spent countless hours helping with Eagle projects that benefit the community. I run the archery range at a youth camp. I teach merit badges (Environmental Science, Camping, Emergency Preparedness, Communications and others). In my church I have served as the leader over the young men. I was in charge of weekly activities, service projects and Gospel instruction. I served as the leader over a men's organization during a time when a new sub-division was being built. I organized help with moving dozens of people in. I am currently serving as the 1st councilor in a bishopric for a congregation of young single adults. I served a two year mission to Sweden.
