Hi I'm Helen Sturdevant

I was baptized a member at age 14 in the Colorado River on a bright May morning. The sun was hot and the water was cold.

About Me

When I was 16 years old, I became homeless because my father was very ill and hospitalized, and my mother did not want me. My brother was overseas on the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. I found refuge with some friends and ultimately worked for people while still going to high school. At age 18, I managed to get a full time job and then began to take night school courses. Some ten years later, I graduated from a junior college with an Associates of Arts.

Why I am a Mormon

As a very young girl, I came to believe in Jesus Christ. My initial introduction to Him was simple, through music in songs. I knew that He loved me. Later, when I found the Church, I knew I could learn more about Christ and HIs mission to perform the Atonement and then overcome death. As I have studied His mission, I am daily filled with gratitude for the love He has shown, not just for me, but for all mankind.

How I live my faith

I met and married my dear husband more than 38 years ago. We had three boys who kept our lives very busy. As each boy grew up, we all participated in Boy Scouts and each of our boys achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. The Church uses this wonderful program to help boys learn more about cooperation, team work, service and leadership. I have been involved in the women's auxiliary of Relief Society where there is a wonderful bond of sisterhood and friendship. I learned many life skills by attending those meetings and applying the skills in my life with and for my family.
