Hi I'm Christie Hansen

I'm a wife and mother of three who teaches 7th grade reading and language arts. And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I married Safety Man in my 20s and we started a family right away. I spent the first 16 years of motherhood as an at-home mom, but currently teach middle school. I use squeaky rubber chickens to enrich and engage students in the learning process. I also enjoy writing. From 1997 to 2000 I wrote a self-syndicated parenting column -- "From the Trenches." Some of my past articles have been reprinted in Chicken Soup for the Soul books. Most of the writing I do now consists of blogging and keeping a journal. Oh, and I like to send hand-made cards to family, students and friends.

Why I am a Mormon

I have pioneer ancestors who joined the church in England, Scotland and Denmark. I'm grateful to them and to my parents for setting excellent examples for me. Although I was raised in the Mormon faith, as a teen I realized that I needed to know for myself if the teachings and doctrines of this church were, in fact, true. At the time I was taking seminary in addition to my high school classes. Brother Lee had told us again and again that we could get a testimony, a sure knowledge, that the Book of Mormon is true by reading it and then praying about it. I did just that. I received a witness of the Book of Mormon as I read in Alma chapter 5. Verses in that chapter perfectly answered questions I'd been struggling with in my personal life. As I read, I felt a warmth radiating in my body -- something I'd never felt before. I was overwhelmed with a feeling of love and peace, and I knew that my Heavenly Father loved me, knew me, and cared about the problems I was facing. That experience with feeling the Holy Ghost has been followed by many others. I have come to know what my ancestors knew, what my parents know, and what millions of others know. Heavenly Father has a plan for his children. Jesus Christ is at the center of that plan, and His church has been restored to the earth in our day. I am a member of His church, and it is a continual blessing in my life.

How I live my faith

I currently serve in my church in the music department. I work with our chorister, organists, and choir director to coordinate music for our Sunday worship services. I also arrange for special musical numbers. Callings with music have always been a great way for me to stretch, as my own music background really only involved piano playing and accompanying. I haven't always sung with our choir, but I'm returning to singing as a way to feel the love of the Lord in my life. In my everyday life, I think it's important for me to be a good example to those around me. I have never tried alcohol, tobacco, or drugs, but I have seen their impact in the lives of close friends. I think it's especially important for youth to know that you can lead an active, fulfilled life without the influence of alcohol or drugs.
