Hi I'm Sophia

I love art history and religion.

About Me

I am an artist currently residing in Tennessee. In 2014 I wrote a comic book about public school desegregation in the South and most recently I have worked as a digital specialist with an historical photo archive. 2016-2018 I will be serving in the Ulaanbaatar Mongolia mission and teaching english.

Why I am a Mormon

In 1833, Joseph Smith added this portion to the Doctrine and Covenants, a book of modern scripture: "Verily, I say unto you, that it is not needful that the Apocrypha should be translated. Therefore, whoso readeth it, let him understand, for the Spirit manifesteth truth; And whoso is enlightened by the Spirit shall obtain benefit therefrom; And whoso receiveth not by the Spirit, cannot be benefited. Therefore it is not needful that it should be translated. Amen." (D&C 91:3-6) This is an unusual place to begin in describing my faith, but it is as good as any. In these lines I see a gospel the grows from Smith's relationship with God. That relationship included trust, learning, interdependence, regret, and respect. I identify most with that sort of relationship to deity. In addition, I appreciate the commitment to gaining knowledge that this gospel can profess, and that it acknowledges a variety of ways we gain knowledge. These lines show that we can gain spiritual and practical knowledge from sources even outside of our own tradition, and that all of us are capable of failing to learn with the spirit that can enlighten.

How I live my faith

I live my faith through writing, making art, and keeping a keen eye on how I participate in my community.
