Hi I'm Troy Dougherty

I love sports. I have eight wonderful children. I'm part Irish, German, and Slovakian. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a husband and father of eight children. I grew up in Washington and went to high school in Elma. I played football and basketball at Grinnell College (IA) and earned a bachelor's degree in Spanish. Prior to earning my undergraduate degree, I spent two years in the Dominican Republic where I taught the Dominican people about the Savior and the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Those were two of the best years of my life. I've earned advanced degrees in Sport Management (M.Ed.) and Higher Education Administration (Ed.D.). I enjoy competition and have embraced the challenge of running marathons. I also enjoy playing Scrabble with my wife and coaching my kids in football, basketball, baseball, and soccer. My favorite TV shows are SportsCenter, Shark Tank, and Chopped. My bucket list includes items like traveling to Ireland and Slovakia to seek out my ancestors, completing an Ironman triathlon, and taking my family to the Dominican Republic to meet the many wonderful friends I made as a young man. I am currently the Director of Housing & Student Living at a private university. I strive to lead in a way that reflects respect for and committment to my colleagues and to the mission of the institution.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I have a testimony of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. For me it's simple--either Joseph Smith saw God and Jesus Christ like he said he did, or he didn't. The truthfulness of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and all that it entails (e.g., latter-day prophets and apostles, revelation, priesthood authority, The Book of Mormon, temples, forever families, etc.) hinges on the reality of God's visitation to a young boy in a grove of trees in the spring of 1820. If that visit took place, it's all true! I have received the confirming witness that God and Jesus Christ did indeed appear to Joseph Smith and subsequently conferred upon him the authority to restore the Church of Jesus Christ to the earth in these latter days. The fulness of the gospel has been restored. The Church of Jesus Christ has been restored and the Savior Himself stands at the helm.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by practicing what I preach and repenting when I fall short. My heart continues to change as I recognize my weaknesses and strive to emulate the example of Jesus Christ. I attend church every Sunday and serve the members of my church and community on a weekly basis. I find great strength in studying the words of inspired prophets and apostles in the scriptures.
