Hi I'm Shirley

I live in in Mt Airy, North Carolina, more popularly known as "Mayberry" from the Andy Griffith Show. I am a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. I have a special love for the mountains and go there as often as I can. I always wanted to be a teacher when I was growing up and that led to my attending Appalachian State University, then called Appalachian State Teachers College. I met my husband there. I had never met a Mormon before and he opened my eyes to a whole new world of thought concerning religion and our Heavenly Father's plan for his children. As he taught me, everything he said made so much sense to me. I had no argument. I guess you could say that I was one of those "golden people" that missionaries love to find. I was baptized soon after we were married and have been very active in the church since then. Actually, my husband and I have just been called to the Kentucky Louisville Mission. We will serve there for 6 months. We are excited to start this new adventure in our lives. I taught school for 30 years and have been retired for quite sometime. I loved teaching and I love retirement. We were blessed with five children, one son and four daughters. We have 11 grandchildren, two girls and 9 boys! I love music, reading, couponing, walking the Greenway by the river, watching our grandchildren participate in their sports events and anything else they do.

Why I am a Mormon

Why I am a Mormon? Well, first and foremost I have learned that I am literally a daughter of God. I am of divine worth. I know that Jesus Christ is my elder brother and my Savior and Redeemer. When I was learning about the church I realized that I have purpose in this life...where I came from, why I'm here and where I'm going. I am so grateful that I met a young man who wasn't afraid to share his faith with me and teach me the things of the spirit that has made such a difference in my life. This is Christ's church and all the doctrines are his doctrines that have been restored to the earth in this day for our time. I know we have a prophet who leads us today, President Thomas S. Monson, just as the prophets of old. I know that Joseph Smith restored Christ's church and I know that he translated the Book of Mormon which is another testament of Jesus Christ. I am very happy being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I feel that I have the most wonderful gift there is to receive.

How I live my faith

I enjoy serving in the church and in the community. Serving others is what brings me the most joy. I have done everything from working with the very young children to teens and adults. Presently, I sing in the choir, and am on a planning committee in the women's auxiliary. My husband and I also work with those who are searching for employment. I love to do visiting teaching which is a program in our church that reaches out to all the women each month. Each woman is assigned a group of other women and their families to visit or contact each month. This keeps us in touch and also provides an avenue to help when there is need in the homes. It also creates a bond of sisterhood that is very supportive and helpful. I serve in my community in an outreach program called "Grace's Closet" which is a not for profit organization that gives clothing to those in need. This volunteering has brought me so much joy. We have reached hundreds of families in need and it is a delight to see the appreciation in their faces. As I said, service brings joy to me.
