Hi I'm Mary Jane Dumais

I grew up in Santa Clara, CA. I have 2 older sisters and we had the best parents. I joined the church in July 1979.

About Me

I worked at a clerk at the phone company where I met my husband, Larry. He joined the church shortly before we married. I was very fortunate to be able to stay at home with our 4 children (3 girls, then a boy)- which was what I always wanted to do with my life. It wasn't easy financially, but we were greatly blessed. They are all grown up now, the two oldest having families of their own. I have an AA degree in Data Processing and Psychology. And I'm really good at putting together programs and such on the computer. I love to sew, knit, crochet, hike (though that's getting harder to do now that I'm old and decrepid - well in my 60's) and one of my most favorite things to do is swim in the river in Yosemite. It's extremely cold, but the water is so clear and beautiful. When I'm there, or anywhere in the world, I marvel at the diversity of creations that Heavenly Father made for our enjoyment. I love the gospel and love talking about spiritual events that people have or that I have. My husband and I have experienced many miracles in our life together and try very hard to remember that it's through Him that we have so much to be thankful for.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I have received an affirmation that the gospel is true. I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet and I know that we have a prophet today to guide us through life. It only makes sense to me that Heavenly Father wouldn't leave us alone without a leader. I know He loves each and every one of us just as our earthly father did. I have a strong testimony of this. Even though when I was young I wasn't necessarily looking for an organized religion, I did know that Heavenly Father was real and that Jesus was my Savior. Since joining the church, I have learned so much more about the love they have for all of us. I have learned more about Jesus' suffering on Gethsemane and what it means to me. It makes sense to me that there has to be authority to baptize and carry out other ordinances that are required to return to Him. I feel like my greatest gift IS my testimony and I try to do what I can to nurture it so it will continue to grow.

How I live my faith

How do I live my faith? I try really hard to do what I think my Father in Heaven would want me to do. I remember that Jesus suffered anything I might suffer from times 10 so I can handle what comes my way. I have been a teacher in Relief Society, Primary, Young Women's and Sunday School youth. And I have to say when I first started doing lessons, I was so overwhelmed because of my inadequacy. But the more I did it, the easier it became and I really think I learned way more than my students did - which turned out to be my favorite thing about teaching. Being very shy, visiting teaching was really hard at first, but having faith in Heavenly Father and my Savior Jesus Christ helped me overcome that and I have made many friends over the years because I fulfilled my calling.
