Hi I'm Earl Downey

I am a husband, father and grandfather in a wonderful family. I am a disciple of Jesus Christ and a surgeon.

About Me

I was born of goodly parents. My father was a career US Army officer and we lived all over the world. I have a brother and a sister. I was married in 1969 to my wife of 44 years and we have 6 children and 15 grandchildren. I was motivated to go to medical school and become a surgeon when I was in the US Navy during the Vietnam war 1970-1. I completed training in general and pediatric surgery and have practiced pediatric surgery for 30 years. I love my patients and families I take care of. I enjoy mountain biking and hiking, watching Hercule Poirot and other good movies, almost any kind of music, talking and being with my children and their families, and reading, especially the scriptures. I lost my older son 3 months ago to melanoma and miss him greatly.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents taught me to believe in God. Like many, I went through a period of my life when I doubted this, but I always felt there was a higher power. During this period of several years I was drawn to God, and my heavenly Father answered my prayers to know the truth by bringing some very special people into my life who taught me about Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon. I was given a Book of Mormon by my wife before we were married-she told me it would answer my questions about God. I read the book almost without interruption and with a continual feeling that it was true. I received a confirmation in my heart that it was true in a very powerful way. It has been the power that has lead me to Christ. My life after this has been changed forever for the better as I have sought to follow the Master, Jesus Christ and seek to have His atonement applied in my life. This opportunity is available to all of God's children: Any one can know for themselves that Joseph Smith did ask and receive directly in person from the Father and the Son the knowledge of their existence and the plan of happiness for all of us. He did receive and translate the Book of Mormon, a book written by ancient prophets specifically for us in our day as a second witness for Jesus Christ. Through faith, sincere prayer, study, and obedience to his commandments we can know through the power of the Holy Spirit-we can know.

How I live my faith

I like to spend my time trying to put into action the things I know are true. I could be called a truth seeker and believe that you have to be true to the things you know are true. Truth is always truth, no matter where you find it. Being and LDS member helps me to do this as I go to church and participate in the gospel, including daily prayer and study of God's word, including the scriptures and words of the prophets. I am a home teacher to 3 wonderful families and love to visit them. They are some of the finest people I have ever known. I serve in my church as the member who helps to organize an annual blood drive for the community. I also have been asked to lead discussions in my church classes. My involvement as a surgeon has been a great blessing in my life. I am blessed to serve people every day and help them through serious times in their lives and through difficult situations. I love to learn about my ancestors-they were wonderful people from all walks of life! They lived the best they could when they were here, and as I have learned more about them I have come to know that we have an eternal family.
